Recommend me a new set of PC speakers.

My Logitech X-540's are crapping out on me so I need new ones. Budget is $100. Preferably 5.1 surround but if I can get 2.1's with better quality for the same price then that's fine.

All I ask for is something with a decent subwoofer that doesn't crackle when turned up to full bass, and won't murder the sound quality when it comes to higher ranges.

No Logitech's judging from what I've read in previous speaker threads.

TBH, go with Logitech 5.1's and forget about a more expensive brands 2.1's.

Its like if you go to McDonalds, they might have the Whopper and it looks good but its expensive and it has pickles and only two pieces of meat. But then theirs the chicken nuggets. Theirs five of them and each one is awesome and sometimes they are different sizes but each one is special and awesome and tasty. And there are no pickles. And its cheaper. And they both taste the same. (and the chicken nuggets look a lot cooler) And if your into that homo BS like weight watchers its less calories.

This. Or get a pair of studio monitors. You can get some M-audio AV30s for under $100 at any good music store. I seem to recall Steve's on Rideau has some.

Thanks for the recommendation TSI. I'd rather a more compact set as I don't have too much room to work with on my desk. I'll definitely consider them though.

What other brand/models should I be looking at?

What's the max size? I mean, you're not going to get anything great for that price, but they're pretty much as small as the good ones come.
Actually, I lie. David Eden makes these. It's a US store but you should be able to find them online. Good quality, small build. A bit over budget, but that's going to happen anyways.

There's always these too. Long and Mcquade on Alta Vista can probably order them in for you--I was there over the weekend and they didn't have them. They're a bit bigger, but cheaper.

Wow I'm stupid. I didn't actually look up the dimensions of the AV30's, I just assumed they were big stereo-ish speakers.

They're $96.77 at PC Cyber. Looks like my choice at the moment.

Yeah, those are good, except that they're twice ebug's budget. The Av30s really are your best bet.

I too have been looking for some new PC speakers, but I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the higher-end style. So I'm curious what kind of connections you need to hook these up? Is it the standard 3.5mm jacks?

I know at one point my audiophile friend was talking about his setup and said that his speakers needed to have a small mixer board to work with the PC. Is that needed here? Also, is any necessary wires included with them?

You usually use a 3.5mm to RCA cable to hook up those cheap mini-monitor style speakers. It is normally included.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Have a look at the website for the AV-30's, and check out the picture of the back of the speakers.. they feature RCA inputs. You can get cables that go from a 3.5mm jack (so what you would plug into your computer/ipod) to RCA. I use that to connect my ipod to the receiver in the home theatre system.

Alternatively, there are much fancier better ways of getting the sound from your computer to the speakers, but that would cost a bit.

Mixing board was probably because he was using full-on monitors. Those ususally have a single input each. You thereby need to find a way to split the channels output by a single-output source while making sure that the sound quality remains the same. It's a bit like a home theatre receiver--it recieves the signal from your HDMI/TOSLINK/whatever audio interface you use and then sends it to your speakers individually.

As Freezer said, these smaller sets are designed for computer use: the AV30s do come with the RCA inputs, which are internally processed to each speaker. Some other models even have a direct 3.5mm jack, but they tend to be on the cheaper side.
