I plan on getting a new 500 GB hardrive for installing Win 7 and some storage.
Problem is I have no clue about the manufacturers and the quality they deliver
especially regarding reliability.
So guys guys lend me a quick hand and tell me which is a good drive (500 GB)

^^ I wouldn't get the Samsung F2 - it's an 'eco friendly, green drive' it spins at a lower speed therefore is slower.

Here's the problem, another two people are going to come in this thread and say "Don't go WD, I've had 7 crap out on me. Pick <brand>"

Just go with what's in your budget, make sure it's got a decent warrenty, if it breaks, get a new one.

More reliable than Samsung judging from what I've heard from people.

You probably should read what it is before you recommend something...

I was giving a quick recommendation, surely if I got it wrong someone would have corrected me, which is what happened. I admitted I was wrong, why are you posting now?

I'm sure he's capable of just looking at the hard drive section and picking one out at random but he asked for a recommendation

Samsung F1 or WD Caviar Black. Both excellent, fast drives.

You're still posting, and I really don't see what you're trying to gain from it.
Just to give some advice for in future I guess, so next time someone asks to recommend something the person who posts will actually recommend something from either experience with it or knowledge of it.

What are you gaining from that post?

Now chill guys.

I would get a WD Caviar Black, whatever size is in your price range.

Seconded. I've had fine experiences with all the WD drives I've used, and the TB Black drive I have now is pretty solid.

Ok, thanks guys, will throw out some karma in a few.

By the way, is there actually a noticeable difference between a 16 MB and 32 MB buffer size ?
Sounds so marginal to me.

I kinda wan't to limit myself to a specific size, not too big one cos the bigger the drive the more crap I have on it over time. So what I do is when the drive is almost full, I delete everything but the best movies, music, etc.

lol. Untrue.
It actually tops the charts in Read Access Time and is pretty high up most charts over at tomshardware.com

My WD is shit in comparison with my Samsung Spinpoint, but it seems the Caviar Black has changed all that and it's just as good, if not better than the new Samsungs. So go for a Samsung F3 or Caviar Black.

My view on WD is that they aren't the fastest or most exclusive, but they'll last a lifetime. Mate of mine has a 40GB WD with over 40 000 hours of runtime behind it and not even one reallocated sector or read error as system disk in his server.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
