I have a WD 250GB that's basically run for 3 straight years no problem.

I would go WD from reviews I've read, and on my planned builds in November-January, I intend to use some WD Caviar Blacks (500GB) due to good reviews(would love an SSD, but it's not gonna happen in my budget range).

My Spinpoint F1 320GB has lasted me a year now, no issues whatsoever.
I think the higher capacity ones that max had aren't as reliable.

^^ I wouldn't get the Samsung F2 - it's an 'eco friendly, green drive' it spins at a lower speed therefore is slower.
lol. Untrue.
It actually tops the charts in Read Access Time and is pretty high up most charts over at tomshardware.com

My WD is shit in comparison with my Samsung Spinpoint, but it seems the Caviar Black has changed all that and it's just as good, if not better than the new Samsungs. So go for a Samsung F3 or Caviar Black.
I've just been pleasantly surprised by the speed of the Spinpoint F2. Transfer rates from my F1 to my F2 are between 90-100 MB/s.

I have had a HDD or couple die from Maxtor, Seagate, WD, Hitachi and Samsung.
Right now the WD Black is considerably more expensive than Samsung F1 over here so I have went obviously for the F1s. No issues whatsoever *knocks the wood*

One of my F1s did start misbehaving a bit, but a format seems to have sorted that out - and it did happen after I dropped it on a hard wood floor.

You mean after you followed the instructions and installed it in your computer and never touched it (for RMA purposes) right?

I love that. Doesn't matter how badly you missthreat the hardware, ppl still send it for RMA.

*except when I need to explain to ppl why its their fault and not eligible for RMA*

Haven't had any issue's at all with my 750GB F1. Just got for a F1 or Caviar Black, depending which is cheapest in your area.

Samsung F1 or WD Caviar Black. Both excellent, fast drives.
I have them both so another recommendation for both of those.

Personally here I can get another 750GB Samsung F1 for the same price as a 500GB WD Caviar Black. So assuming its similar over there i'd go for the Samsung.

My issues with the Samsung F1s may just be bad luck. I do own 14 F1s, so having a couple fail isn't that unprobable. The samsung 500GB F3 is cheap and pretty fast, so that's what I'd pick up

Did you check the S/N & Batch info of the failed drives? I know for fact one main batch was faulty since it left the factory.

Yup. 2 of the failed drives were from that batch. Had another 2 working ones from there too, RMAed them. I had another 2 drives die on me, but they were from different batches. Oh well, didn't loose anything I couldn't redownload. Thank god for fast Internet and usenet
