I still don't have a shutter release so I can't take exposures over 30 sec without having to hold the button down on the camera resulting in blurry images, so I may not have any turn out.

Gonna go with something like this for the low-light photos
My darling girlfriend in the photos there, but I'm gonna get a tripod out.

ha ha brilliant!
er, sorry . . .
er, sorry . . .
Using manual exposure, what should I set up the camera up like to get the best I can in very dark light?burnzz wrote:

you did well - i'd go big aperture, as much ISO (smaller number) with longer exposure.
hell, i'm still learning myself . . .
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.125 sec (1/8)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 17 mm
Exposure: 0.00
ISO Speed: 500

It depends on what you are shooting..CammRobb wrote:

For instance, when I shot stars for one of my star timelapse experiments, the shutter speed could be no longer than 20 seconds (otherwise the stars would leave a trail, which I did not want). Knowing that, I then set the aperture as wide as possible.. and adjusted the ISO to get the correct exposure.
It's cool to see you experiment writing with a sparkler. One thing to note is you should manually set your white balance. The background is that colour, because it automatically set to something around 4000-5500K (if I were to guess).. to take care of the sparkler. Since the background lights would most likely be tungsten, they will create a yellow-red colour cast at night. Well, something to that effect anyway..
I'd have a look around flickr for some cool shots. Start here - http://www.flickr.com/search/?ss=2& … amp;m=text .. I'm sure you can come up with a few more keywords, but "light painting" should be a good start.
Mm, the photo doesn't seem to have anything interesting going on.. Were they doing work at that hour? like, was there stuff moving around?burnzz wrote:

If so, what I would suggest is to close down the aperture to around f/16 or smaller, and drop the ISO back to 200. This means you'd get a shutter speed of around 4-8 seconds. If there was anything going on, this would appear as a blur in the image and give a sense of motion/movement. Also, when the aperture is smaller, the light (on the left) will appear as a starburst.. and could look cooler
see Cam, if you hang around you get to learn!
Actually it looks pretty cool with the background all blurred like that.CammRobb wrote:

Hmm, the only lowlight stuff I have is shot on a compact. Thus: It's shit.
That's good considering the idea of an assignment is to go out and do it..liquidat0r wrote:

and yea.. I've done it too..

Kmarion, my picture above? i took that the day before the assignment. it was a concrete pour, i thought it looked pretty cool.
honestly, i think one or two post-dated pix should be ok, if they can illustrate the topic . . .

Well I took the photos two days ago, so I think that countsKmarion wrote:

Out of the lowlight photos that I do have on Flickr, only the thumbnails look good . They're blurry and grainy when you view them properly
