Ok try this when did he first install the game ? u say last night ok do the following
1. click start
2. Click all programs
3. click Accessories
4.click system tools
5. click system restore
6. click restore my computer to an erlier time ( change the date for 1 week back if u installed game last night ) click restore and it will shut down your windows and it will do its thing live it running it will auto start up .
That should get read of old coppy of BF2 then try installing your new one
problem u having is this your new game is looking for old cd key which you toke back ( its not registering so u need2 remove old version first as you dont have cd anymore you need to do above )
