Hi. I have a question. Its kinda random but I thought this would be a good place to post it.

About 5 years ago my uncle and his friend bought a lake to fish at. They got 1000 rainbow trout dumped into the lake. Most of the fish weighed around 4 pounds at that time. Now 5 years later I was thinking about going up to see if I can catch anything. I went up to check it out to see if I could see any signs of them and I noticed a small stream coming out from the lake. I know rainbow trout swim upstream to lay their eggs, but if they could, would they swim downstream for any reason or would they just just stay in the lake and lay their eggs? Or could they have died off? lol. I really just want to know if there will still be trout in the lake now.

PS: My uncle actually got scammed and bought it off someone who didnt even own the land. So after about 2 months the real owners noticed us at the lake and told my uncle that he had to go, LOL. I think around 200 fish were caught before they closed.

they could have moved down stream, or could have been killed off by predators/lack of food/sickness/exposure

1) 1000, 4 lb. trout into a lake...how big is this lake? That's a lot of grown fish to dump into an ecosystem all of the sudden. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't have mostly died off quickly due to food shortage. Some would have probably survived to live on another day, but...

2) ...there is an outlet from the lake into a stream? Bye-bye trout. I mean, you might get amazingly lucky and catch one in the lake, if they were still there, but you would probably have better luck fishing the stream at this point.

3) He "bought" a lake from someone who didn't own it to begin with? How did he figure it was his? Did he just hand someone cash and assume he now owned some bit of land?

This all begs for witty facepalm imagery.

I live in the West Coast of Scotland so the only predator I can think of is a Peregrine Falcon and a Golden Eagle but they are rare around here. I hope there is some man, around 200/1000 were caught so there should be at least some.

agree with everything you just said. You would think if someone was to buy something as big as a lake there would be some paper work to sign? I sure wouldn't buy a lake if it wasn't on paper.

I was around 11 at the time, thats all my dad told me. And what the fuck does it have to do with you anyway? Btw, the lake is pretty small and the stream leaving the lake is around a foot wide and half a foot deep so I doubt there will be any fish in there.

find pools down the stream and fish those

theres a place that i catch beautiful trout that is similar.... rich city people keep their lake stocked, but there's a pretty good brook coming out of it and it floods over pretty good everytime it rains

some really nice trout in the brook below it in the pools

I don't think anyone is trying to be a jerk to you personally, it's just that the whole situation sounded a little, dare I say, fishy....

But if the stream leaving the lake is that small, and the lake itself is also small-ish, I honestly doubt there are many trout left. You might try fishing anyway, just to see if you catch something. If the lake does happen to be big enough to support a decent fish population, I would still expect you to get a few bites or to at least catch a fish. If it seems dead, then it is probably exactly that. You need healthy plant life, microbial life, small aquatic life, etc. before you start to be able to have a healthy fish population in a body of water.
