Today I realized that I could get Windows 7 Professional for free from my university.

So far I'm using Vista Home Premium. Is it possible to install 7 without losing any data? I'd install 7 on C: (that's where Vista is now), all important data is on D: (Partition on same HDD). Can it be done?

You can "upgrade" from Vista to 7.

It basically replaces your OS while keeping all your data and settings.

Sounds good. Thanks.

I'm guessing it's an option when I boot from the disc?

Just boot to your Vista install and whack the disk in. It'll autorun.

piracy
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I was honestly hoping someone would pop up and say "But you can do a clean install and everything will work!!".

Feck.

No, I don't pirate operating systems. If there is one thing  I want to legally own on my computer is my OS, too much work gets done for me to put my trust into a stupid piracy copy, which usually gets detected after MS release a whole new bunch of updates for 7.

Why would you buy and update in the first place?  Get a real copy

£30 in comparison to £180..... Yeah.

Also, it's the UPGRADE version, it's not just an update. It's the full operating system, all it requires is for you to have a working Microsoft OS when installing it.

Pirate XP 64 bit, or Vista 64 bit, upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit.

Worth a shot.
