I think my PC has just started overheating today, i booted up, and loaded normal programs (Browser, MSN, music player) and then i started smelling melting or heating up plastic along with a really loud fan. turned it off and went out then came back on tonight doing the same stuff.

Sitting there for about an hour and it starts to get pretty bad (almost getting high off it bad), so i took the side off and the fan slowed down instantly and it's been pretty normal since.
The side is still off, and a bit of plastic is still in the air.

Why would it suddenly start overheating like this? Nothing has changed that i can think of, apart form the heating in the house starting to kick in for the first time this winter, but i have had the PC for the last 3 years at least with no problems.

Open your PC and clean out any dust, or check for dust.

Took the side off and it stopped, but then it started happening again this week.
Took it down to a shop and turns out it was an overheating PSU, the fan was only working intermittently.
