I just bought a bunch of Crucial M225 SSDs (sick of hard drives making everything slow - going for SSD RAID0)....

Was that a good idea or is there anything better out there for similar money?

They seemed cheap for indilinx drives....

I did just say they're indilinx, not JMicron.

2 for now, depending on performance might add another 2.

2x64GB should be adequate for an OS and some apps.

Would've rather gone for higher capacity 'cos they're faster - but they're also much more money, these were only £100 each and I figure RAID has got to be worth more than 40-50MB/s transfer rates.

Wouldn't be a horrible idea. Then just slap one or two 1TB drives into the rig for storage of videos and music. Sounds like it was a good buy.

I already have several TBs of storage in that rig. Got a 1.5TB Samsung (only a slow eco-disk, but they're cheap) to push that up even more as well.....

A mate of mine bought 6 of the OCZ drives in RAID 0. I think those were the JMicron drives, so he's probably going to lose his OS in a few months.

Bert, where did you get them for 100 pounds?

I'd get a 3rd and go with RAID 5.

Nah....

I have bi-weekly backups of the entire drive (on a RAID1 array of cheaper disks). With RAID on SSDs you typically cannot run TRIM which means you will need to periodically wipe the drives fully. Restoring from a backup image works out better for doing this.

Also, RAID0 is faster.

I can get good deals on hard drives through various work contacts....

That said, I was looking at them on OCUK initially, where they WERE only £110 (+VAT, but I don't pay that currently).

They're 150 now.

I would only really buy Intel SSDs atm. They outperform everything else on the market, by a huge amount.

But they cost twice what everything else does.

no?

Seen the prices of X25-M G2 lately? Its <200€.

Can't really even compare the 100€ JMicron SSDs to Indlix and Intel controller ones.

They have a reason for that pricing. They are twice as good as every other SSD.

X25 E isn't worth twice the price imo. The M variant sometimes performs even better for half the price. Can confirm X25s are a beast from first hand.

Leave it for another month Ghetto, really not much point, or wait till after Xmas when prices drop.
