You could get something better, for sure. RAM is really cheap right now, so lots of premades are coming with lots of RAM to look good.

I'm going to guess the video card and CPU are budget components (quad or not), and the monitor is especially crap. You could definitely get better.

You could do better for $999. Not sure if you could get the monitor in under that price, but it wouldn't be too much more to get a monitor with it.

uhhh ... the 920 can't use the p55 boards. It needs a different socket. Unless I have overlooked some glaringly obvious detail ...

I came up with a build for $1027 from New Egg without even a GPU. That i7-920 crap is expensive. You could really just get an i5 750 and be doing just as well and be able to open the budget up by a healthy margin ...

my mistake...  x58
and i7 920 and i5 750 are about the same price... and the 920 is a little better in tests
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/sh … 34&p=1

The i5 750 is now down to 150 bucks... although its a little slower than the 920... it's 50 bucks cheaper...

About? Not really. You'll spend a good $100 more between a decent mobo (you can cheap out if you want) and the 920 versus a similar mobo and the 750. The 920 is $30-40 more expensive than the 750 alone.

Look into this:

Liquid Cooling.  Combine with Dell EPP 10% discount and a $100 off Coupon that expires today (pm me if you want it.  I won't use it).  Much better than the Newegg offer I think.

Jesus christ I can't belive the pricelist of the extras.

920 comes with it. Want a 960? That'll be $500. Want a 975? (0.13 Gz increase) that's $1000 on top of the original price. Want us to spend five minutes doing a shitty overclock on it? That's $200.

!

     12GB Triple Channel 1333MHz DDR3 [add $350 or $11/month1]
    24GB Triple Channel 1333MHz DDR3 [add $2,950 or $89/month1]

Seriously what the fuck, 2x the RAM for 8 and a half times the price? Are the people who buy the extras just fucking stupid?

Yeah.  Never select upgrades from Dell.   That's where they make the profit from unsuspecting buyers.

Finny, it's because DDR3 is finally taking over as the new memory, therefore DDR2 is now getting more expensive and harder to find. Just look at overclockers.co.uk, their DDR2 stock has dropped to like 20 in the past 2 months.

Nah, standard Dell discounts the general consumer doesn't know about.

EPP is employee/student discount
$100 off is a type of coupon I get from Dell every month.
