it is serious offroading, you need low range gear to climb up that steep road.

Well now we are leaning towards the Jeep Patriot. There is a new used in my town that is $15,697. That is $10,000 cheaper than what I was willing to pay. With the extra 10k I can put it towards a small lift on the Patriot bigger tires (both winter and all season tires) and maybe some extras. plus I have 6k right now that I can put on a down payment. Personally I like the fact of not spending 25k.

Hey the Suzuki isnt a Land rover, but its a lot better than most of the Soft Roaders mentioned before. It has a low range gearbox, and a lockable diff. Better ground clearence too. Its a better choice if you need to go off road.

I would never get a Jeep. But it's up to you in the end. Even though you're saving $10,000, in the long run that could seriously backfire on you. Jeeps are known to be unreliable, and...well.... when buying a new car, reliability is everything.

But if you think it's the right choice, go for it

Nope zimmer's right here. I've rolled two jeeps. Rollover is way too common.

Solution: Don't drive in a way to roll them. That has little to do with the "reliability" of the car as well.

TJ/YJ were great. All these new bourgeois models they've come up with are actually quite bad. They're just Dodge platforms rebranded, in truth, and that will show at 80k.

Of the three Subaru hands down. The Jeep is expensive and useless and the Nissan looks weird and is probably useless.

Also I don't know how you got down to these three but I'm sure there are others in the same price range that are equally good with the Subaru that you're not considering for some reason.

Apparently a few of these new ones are based on the Dodge Caliber platform, but I agree about the quality of the older ones. I have a '96 XJ that's got about 130k on it, but is starting to show some age. My dad has a '03 Grand Cherokee that's still pretty good, too and it's done about 110k I think.

I love the Subaru. I really do. Its just when you are buying a vehicle with a girl we both have to agree on it. She likes that Nissan thing because it looks more like a car. Anyway, this Jeep Patriot is based off the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass but beefed up more and is trail rated. Also the one I am looking at has the "off-road" package which includes:

Freedom-Drive II Off-Road Group – Active full-time 4x4 with selectable 4WD LOCK Electronically Controlled Coupling, includes P215/65R17 OWL tires, 17-inch aluminum wheels, tow hooks, fuel tank and transmission/oil pan skid plates, fog lamps, full-size spare tire, CVT2L with crawl ratio feature, Hill Descent Control and driver's seat height adjuster (4WD model only). Also comes with a lift as well.

I've been reading up on a lot of costumer reviews about this vehicle and people seem to have good things to say with the odd person not liking the overall feel of it on the highway. The interior is exactly like the pic I posted above which I really like. So I don't know guys. To me this is a deal I cannot walk away from.

@Dilbert, I have no idea the warranty on it. I am going to the dealer on Tuesday during my lunch break to go over the details about the vehicle.

Also, the thing that keeps coming up in the Cons section of every review for the Jeep is "uncomfortable back seats" - and if you're going to have a kid then that's a bit of a problem. SUVs should be comfortable throughout, yet I stumble on that comment on every Jeep Patriot review.

Need to ask if it is a manufactuers warranty or a dealers warranty - big difference.
If you can pay to extend the manufacturers warranty then look at it.
Not sure what the US is like but elsewhere the insurance based dealer warranties are next to useless - eg blow a head gasket and they'll pay for the gasket - you pay the labour. But they look good on paper 'all parts of your vehicle are covered'.

Subarus are great in the Aus climate, not sure how terrific in snow, salted roads etc. You need to research it.
Doubt they'll be quite as tough as the jeep with all that extra gear.
