.Suuuuuuuuup/Freeeeeezzzzeeeerrr,

So last night I was listening to some musics when I took out the headphone plug, put it back in the DAC and heard this "pop". Wondering what the fuck had just happened, I turned it off.. then on again, only to hear static as the power LED light faded to nothing. I think I left if for a sec at this point before unplugging the USB connection and put it back in. When I turned it back on, everything was only about half the volume it should have been..

After this, I unplugged EVERYTHING, left it for a minute or so and put everything back. It um.. seems fine now, although I think I'm subconsciously trying to listen out for any imperfections..

I didn't fuck it up, did I?

Was the pop in the headphones or from within the unit?

@Winston_Churchill: ASUS Xonar DX.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The D1 is their most basic model, but getting it isn't worth it, as it performs quite a bit worse than the DX.

The DX is a great card for the money, and it'll be more than good enough for both your speakers and the $10 000 Wharfedales of your rich neighbour.

Ermm, the headphones..

Edit: I was wearing them at the time, so I heard the pop through the headphones.. I then took them off and looked at the connections etc.. before turning it back on.. which was when I heard the static/+music coming from the headphones..

Then I guess it was just some glitchy connector somewhere. It's probably fine.

Oki. I just.. urg.. cause if something happened I've got to send it back to canadaland.. so it'll take like 2-3 weeks to get back to me. A mate of mine also has the HD555's, so I guess if I think there is a problem, I can test his headphones to make sure it's not the cans.. XD

minty something to remember: never unplug your headphones while the amp is on. You have a TRS connector meaning when you are unplugging the jack, the ring touches where the sleeve should be touching and that causes problems, you could even short-circuit everything. If you had a balanced amp with XLR connectors you could avoid that though I'd still recommend turning the amp off completely before plugging/unplugging in your headphones.

Ohhhhhhh shite. So plug everything in before turning it on.. mm, I've been wondering what the whole balance/unbalanced inputs thing means..

And thanks man.. "the more you know"..

Umm, if I did damage my stuff.. it would be more along the lines of "wow this doesn't work anymore" compared to "this sounds sliiiightly different to before.. but maybe it's cause im tired/annoyed/my tinnitus is worse tonight/etc"?

i can't think of anyone better to start it.
the whole audio thing didn't start for me until my wife started consulting - meaning out of the house four days a week.
that's when i started unplugging the shitty headphones and started listening thru my shitty speakers. i've learned more
about audio browsing this forum than i would've on my own.

Lol, this place with it's photography and audio gear. Frkn expensive

Heh, me thinks .sup/freezer would be the appropriate ones to start it.. however.. give it a few days and let me think about it (ie. give me time to finish my uni exams ) and I'll look at making it. Would discuss things like:
- what you have
- what you want
- your own reviews
- projects you are doing
- questions (like "halp i think i fucked up my DAC")

Hmm, but tech section or the music forum?

Methinks the tech section seems more appropriate since the discussion would be about hardware.

I find it ridiculous that companies don't even release the specs for their TOTL stuff anymore. I mean, if those speakers are so good, can't you at least tell me how you measured the frequency response? The THD? Off-axis response? Anything?!

I'm not giving you seven grand just because you really promise that they're really good.
