There was an Engadget article last month about the new Macbook that now has the unibody design but is still made from plastic. Now, Engadget is typically all over Steve Jobs and Apple like a fly on dog shit. Not so in this case. They said for the few extra hundred dollars, you could have a Macbook Pro that was made from aluminum and was far superior to the Macbook. That, and apparently the new Macbook gets really dirty and scuffed up when you do nothing at all with it.

So if your budget isn't capable of using a Macbook Pro, I would suggest looking elsewhere. One thing to mention about Macbooks and their Pro versions: They lack multicard readers. You only get an SD card reader when you buy a Pro and nothing when you buy a Macbook. They each also only have two USB ports. So if you like your USB gadgets and tools, you might want to find something that has more than 2. Apples also don't have expansion card slots to improve that USB port number or add eSATA ports or anything like that.

I personally like the Macbook Pro. I think it's a very innovative design and for the money, very much worth it in many respects. But the Macbook? Not a chance in hell.

Buy yourself a Lenovo or an ASUS. You'll be much happier.

Not trying to be a smart ass, really want to know... because I always here the "mac for graphical stuff", but had always thought that most graphical work was done with the likes of photoshop/illustrator/3D max... Always been what I have seen used on TV and what not.

You haven't really listed any reason for wanting or needed a Mac other then that you could use them to do what you could and have been doing anyways. Why learn a whole new system when you are competent and experienced with windows?

Yeah, the MBP is ar superior.. however the top board where your palms rest is (or was?) still fucking plastic. Of course the paint on mine has rubbed off due to general use..

But where did you get the idea that they don't have expansion card slots?

Or is this on the new ones?

For connectivity stuff, I've got 2 USB, 1 FW400 and 1 FW800. I use firewire for my external HD's, so lack of USB ports isn't really an issue..

Basically it comes down to cost.

If you just want a laptop that will browse the web, word process etc. Then I would recommend getting a windows machine and spending the several hundred dollars extra that you would've spent on a Mac on hookers and booze.

My mistake - I meant to type "Macbooks", and not "Apples". My bad. The Macbook PROs have expansion slots, but the normal Macbook? No way, Jose. You also only get all those ports on the Macbook Pro - on the Macbook you ONLY get 2 USB ports and nothing else for expansion, outside of the mini DisplayPort (which really is a joke; you don't even get the VGA adapter anymore for free with the Macbook - you have to pay extra for that and it's $29!!! FOR AN ADAPTER! Not a converter, but a little, tiny ADAPTER!).

Again, the Macbook is a joke. If you have to have an Apple laptop, just suck it up and buy a Pro or buy a Windows laptop that fits your budget. Hell, depending on where you live and what your university/high school is like (if you are a student), they might have computers without OSs on them. Then from there just buy a Windows distro from your school store or download and burn an Ubuntu disc.

EDIT: Uhh ... the new Macbook Pros are aluminum all around and not plastic anywhere on them. Steve was so excited about it during the keynote when he introduced the unibody stuff that he was talking about it and saying "all aluminum, no plastic!" Not necessarily, my friend. The ONLY graphics/media program that is NOT available on a Windows machine that is very much an industry standard is Final Cut Pro. Why? Because Apple owns the company that produces it. They bought it from Macromedia. (I'm parroting Bertser on that one)

Everything else? All available on a Windows PC. The hardware for a Windows machine is also much cheaper in many cases.

Ohhh right. Yeah, there is no way I would be getting a normal Macbook if that's the case. Lol, I also don't like this mini-DVI business. Mine has a real DVI.

But yes, if you go macbook.. get the Pro. They look better, are more solid and have better hardware.

Yeah, as for the programs I can really only think of Final Cut, Logic and maaaybe Aperture (but Lightroom is better tbh, so that's a non issue..)

DVI isn't even an option. It's mini DisplayPort only. That's it. Nothing else, doesn't matter if you have a normal Macbook or a Macbook Pro. Mini DVI is ALL you get. The adapter costs $29 for mini DP to DVI, too. Yea. Rapage.
