Prity much shoot and eat anything. Probably foxes the most, don't eat them tho, its to protect livestock. Wood pigeon, hares, grouse, pheasant and partridges. My Dad and next door neighbour raise thousands of game birds each year to be put in estates and eventually hunted. We release a couple of hundred into the country each year too. My dad has a special gun licence which means he can own a .308 for culling deer. We don't eat deer tho, not fussed on it, it goes to Scotland.

Hunting deer blows bra, imagine field cleaning a 150 lbs deer and hauling its stinking, bleeding bodies out on your shoulders.

But, fly over, I'll take you hunting.

I normally shoot a 8mm Mauser.  This year I mounted a scope on my 870 12 gauge and shot a 1 oz. rifled slug through the smooth barrel.  I am not sure if I want to buy a rifled barrel for the thing or finish my 8mm.  Same cost.

Anyways.  We just stopped at this rest stop.  My day is complete.

well day one consisted of lots of walking, about 12 hours worth

saw a rabbit, two squirrels, a weasel, and two very large cow moose

lots of deer in the area though... just really shitty luck

forgive the quality, shitty camera phone... because i forgot extra batteries for the digital (which is also shit, just less so)

Down here, they moved wolf off the endangered species list, and onto the "here, buy hunting tags for them" list.

After a few years of them hitting the native elk and deer population pretty hard...

Oh, did I mention the little itty bitty detail of them reintroducing the wrong type of wolf back into the area?
Not the little dog-sized mangy overgrown coyotes, no.
The big f'ing Canadian grey wolves.
Smart critters too.
Smarter than they are elsewhere.

General Purpose Load
(NOTE: Load is on the edge of safe book listing, and waaay over book length.)
7mm Mag, 162gr Hornady A-Max, 70.0gr H-1000, Federal 215M GMM, COAL to 0.007" into the lands
Best group: 0.625", 3 rounds, 400yd  (in 3-10mph gusting winds, shooting at the 3mph low-point)
Average: 1/4 to 1/2 MOA depending on caffeine intake that day
All groups shot prone, in the field, harris bipod, known range

All Hornady rounds sorted by overall length & length from base to lands (using collet and micrometer)
When you're stuffing rounds 0.007" into the lands, it's important to separate and group rounds.
Especially when a factory box can vary 0.015" in length...

Elk and venison burger is a touch better with a bit of beef fat added when you're grinding it.

Winchester 70.

Back to the old-school pre 64 extractor design.

Made by FNH, in the same plant that does the stainless steel Army machine gun barrel orders.
i.e., brand new tooling, brand new CNC equipment, and near-match grade barrels - with a rack-grade price.

If you look at the FNH site, they're stamping the .223, .308, and 300WSM with the FNH logo - everything else is stamped Winchester.

wtf? why would they put them there? stupid tbh

the wolves "here" are destroying elk and moose populations, the natives out there killing every cow and calf they come across isn't helping matters either though >.<

we're having a coyote plague now.... which means i need to buy a good varmint rifle in .23 caliber or smaller. thanks to stupid politicians making stupid rules

you're not allowed to hunt with anything over .23 caliber unless it's deer, moose, or bear season. because they somehow think this will stop poaching?

About the same here.  Between the wolves and the indians, the elk and deer are feeling the pressure.

If you need a good, accurate varmint rifle below .23";
a good bolt action 22-250 throwing 70gr rounds or
a good National Match AR-15a4 (flat top + scope).  With 77gr rounds (Sierra MK), anything coyote sized or smaller inside of 600yd is a hittable target -.

.223 bolt-action varmint rifle is an option too.  22-250 has too much powder capacity to throw any rounds above 70gr weight.  Little .223 case, loaded with the slower powders (H1000, for example) can push a 77gr to 90gr bullet.  In a bolt action, you can load the heavy 80+gr rounds a little bit longer, whereas in an AR-15 those long heavy rounds won't fit the magazine.

.223 WSSM goes the opposite extreme.  Where .223 is little powder, heavy bullet - the .223 WSSM goes for the huge powder, small bullet, insane velocity route.  It's a round that'd make Roy Weatherby say "Daaaaaaaamn!"

If I'm looking at breaking into a pack of predators, I'd take my AR-15 loaded with a 20rd magazine of 77gr Sierras
If it's prarie dogs, or a single coyote at long range, I'd go with a bolt action .223 loaded with 90gr Sierras
(Both working under your restriction of "below .23"")

Personally, working under the rules here, I'm prone to using a 7mm Mag Win70 or a match AR-15 for just about everything.

that's because you're in euroland where they ban everything

at rdx

sadly the AR-15 is a "restricted" firearm, and therefor not allowed to hunt with it... even if i was allowed to hunt with it, semi auto rifles are limited to 5 round mags

i'm probably going to get a .223 in a bolt action due to it being cheap to buy ammo for and reload

.22 LR, what people think of as a "twenty two", is a tiny rimfire round.
The loaded cartridge & bullet is just under an inch long.
Fires a 40grain (2.5gm) bullet at just over 1000 feet per second (330m/s), with about 100 ft-lbs of energy.
Uses (I think) about 5 grains of powder.

The .223 (or 5.56x45mm NATO) round, as described above, is not so tiny.
One example load fires a 77gr bullet at 2950 fps, using 24.1 grains of powder.
With the .223's 77gr round, the bullet itself is about the size of the whole case/powder/bullet package of a .22LR

With my .22LR, I can reliably hit a penny-sized coin at 100 yards.
With my .223 AR-15, I can reliably hit a DVD sized disk at 600 yards.

.22LR is good for "hamsters at 100 yards"
.223 is good for "dogs and coyotes at 600 yards"

Good bolt action .223 launching 90gr rounds would be a ton of win, if you're forced to stay under .23" and you're limited to 5 rounds.
(5 rounds, even with predators?)

stalking a good Guinness is no joke my friend.

first you must visit all the water holes in the area, and look closely for signs of a good Guinness.

then when the Guinness appears, you must stalk it for a minimum of 15 minutes for the beast to present itself clearly

then you just drink the stuff tbf.

5 rounds is the limit for all centerfire semi autos except for the M1 Garand

manual action rifles and shotguns have no capacity limit

rimfire rifles have no capacity restrictions at all

unless you're hunting.... then its 5 in rifles and 3 total for shotguns

not sure if the rimfires get messed with with the hunting regs as well... hmmm

see it's generally far more acceptable to curl up into a ball and weep rather than protect yourself in this country, it's really quite pathetic

now i just need to decide on what rifle to get.... im not exactly made of money so price is a factor here lol

suggestions?
