Especially concerning since 80% of Australians live near coast.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8349760.stm
New figures have revealed that sea levels along the coast of Western Australia are rising at a rate double that of the world average.
Statistics from Australia's National Tidal Centre show levels have increased by 8.6mm a year off the coast of the state capital Perth.

That compares to a global average of just over 3mm.

Scientists have said that man-made climate change has played a significant role in the rise.

Climatologists have said that a combination of natural variability and man-made pollution have caused sea levels to rise around the world.

Double trouble

For much of the past century there were average increases of 1.7mm per year, while that rate doubled after 1993.

Some regions, however, have suffered more than others.

New figures show that the sea level rose off Perth in Western Australia and in the Kimberley region to the north by more than 8mm.

Dr John Church, from Australia's government-funded science and research body, the CSIRO, says these are worrying signs.

"Man's role is making a significant contribution to this global average rise," he said.

"I think the fact that sea levels are rising is a major reason for concern and it's a combination of the global average rise together with the natural variability leading to larger regional rises over certain periods and extreme events as in storm surges which will have the most impact…and, of course, sea level rise will not stop in 2100, it will continue for many centuries," he added.

About 80% of Australians live in coastal areas.

There are fears that vulnerable low-lying communities may have to be abandoned in years to come because of flooding and erosion.

CSIRO scientists have said that warming temperatures, which cause water to expand, have been a major trigger for sea-level rises in the 20th Century.

They have also blamed the melting of the world's icecaps and glaciers.
The article did not say why certain areas are seeing higher rises. I assume it's geographical features. At what point does this affect the coastal real estate market (desirability)?

Yeah, I remember hearing about the Maldives being totally submerged underwater in about 100 years. Ocean is rising that's for sure

Antarctica and Perth (western Australia) are "close" to eachother so only natural they should experience this first, also southern parts of NZ should have similar conditions I presume ...

That was a theory about the south of England. Glaciers during the ice age weighted down the northern part, melted and then the massive amount of population and infrastructure that appeared in the south started to tip it back. I'm assuming my geography lecturer was kidding because if it were true then holy mind boggling Batman.

It would be weird if the Maldives finally went under, they'd be like the first country in living memory to completely vanish underwater.

https://i38.tinypic.com/35hplyh.gif I was just going on what the BBC said.

http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf … enDocument

Around four out of five Australians lived within 50kms from the coast in 1996 according to the latest estimates from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The report, Population Growth and Distribution, Australia, showed that 83 per cent of Australian's lived within 50 kms of the coastline while 86 per cent of people lived in urban areas.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne … coast.html
In total, 80 per cent of Australians live in coastal areas and 711,000 homes – worth $150 billion (£70bn) in total – lie within two miles of the sea.

The warming affects coastlines in every Australian state, but extreme weather and rising sea levels are already affecting Sydney' northern beaches and Byron Bay in northern New South Wales.

The report said the state of Queensland was most at risk from extreme weather and rising seas, but more than 200,000 buildings in New South Wales, 80,000 in the southeastern state of Victoria and 17,000 along Tasmania's coast were also extremely vulnerable.

Australia is obviously not balanced for lean.

And I think that, as mentioned earlier, we should expect the west side (being close to Antarctica) to see increases at a faster rate.  If there were studies done on sea level rising in the arctic (close to the north pole), I bet they'd find a similar trend on the regions in closest proximity.

Very few of those are on the West coast, was my point.

And all Aussies should know by now how risky coastal development is.

Here's the thing; water finds it's own level. It is impossible to have an uneven increase in water level.

If that were true water levels used by builders for thousands of years would not work.

What this means is that there is now absolute proof of pole shift.

This also explains climate change and its actually quite simple;  the equator is not where it was a few hundred years ago.

As the Earth is actually egg shaped as it rolls on it's axis certain areas will see an increase in sea level as the water covering the planet conforms less to this egg shape than do the plates.

In short, some areas will become uninhabitable.

Pole shift doesn't mean the end of the world. It means some areas formerly dry will be ocean floor. People will have to relocate.

The one trying to say this is mans fault are snake oil salesmen looking to make a buck.

It obviously wont affect the real estate market here any time soon... we've got houses/apartments/whatever still selling for $5m+. I doubt we'll see any effects until there is a sudden increase, and the water is lapping at our doors. Then we'd probably have problems with the real estate market.

Also, we dont care much for W.A. Mother Earth can claim it back

did you see this?

Australians may have to leave coastal areas as rising sea levels threaten homes, according to a new report.

The parliamentary committee report says urgent action is needed, as seas are expected to rise by 80cm (31 inches).

About 80% of Australians live in coastal areas, and the report recommends new laws banning further development in coastal regions.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8327224.stm

That could affect it.. positively.
