I am in the process of building a budget rig (components should be ordered within a couple weeks) and I am not sure which video card is best price to performance. (Other components will be E5200, 4 gigs of G-Skill (800 mhz), other lower end components).

4870:

It seems to me that the 4890 is clearly the winner, and at 5 bucks more than the 5770, and 5 bucks less then the 260 its the obvious choice. Is this just great pricing? Or is there some pitfall to the 4890.

Get HD 5770. It is not far from HD 4890 in terms of DX10 performance (HAWX on bugged drivers doesn't tell squat, compare to overall performance).

And HD 5770 runs cooler and quieter, DX11 and needs less power.

I just go by the numers. Since 5770 is the highest number listed, that'd be my choice as well GTX 270 doesn't even come close.

I just linked the last page I had been looking at after glancing through that review. Review seems like you get more performance out of the 4890. Especially since it's a budget rig...

EDIT: Looking through the rest of the review, I would probably stick with the 4890. I mean, you get more performance in a card that costs less. Sure there are other benefits that clearly give the 5770 the advantage, but in raw FPS? I think the 4890 is the way to go. But it could go either way. I suppose the problem is that DX11 isn't really being used at all much to be able to tell us just how great it will be in the end. I think the best advice would be this: WAIT! Wait until the DX11 price premium has eroded and wait for Nvidia to release their batch of cards. Then we can tell the REAL price/performance.
