Random question / problem....

Sometimes when I open a program which is installed on my SSD it hangs, I hear one of my hard drives spin up, wait a few seconds then it instantly opens.

I have no idea why it's doing this as the program is installed on the SSD, it shouldn't affect the hard drive at all.

My OS is also stored on the SSD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Nod, more RAMZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! 6GB isn't enough. That or move your page file?
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Don't quote me on this, but instead of using some of your RAM, windows loads a program that doesn't need the speed of RAM to the HDD, to save RAM space. So when you're opening up the program it's loading it from your SSD onto your HDD page file.

Although I could be completely wrong, and I probably am.

the shotgun approach to technology, i like it. Fin, you've forgotten to ask him which drive his PF is on . . .

Yeah that's kinda right.

Apart from my page file is on my SSD not my hard drive.

apparently the page file is on the SSD. we know that, because he told us.
Sup just asked him which program it is - we'll wait for that.
so we know 1) the SATA drive spins up before a program on the SSD opens.
2) the page files on SSD
3) the OS is on the SSD

my theory? the program he used (setup.exe) is on the SATA drive.

The program isn't on the hard drive! I'm not stupid! Obviously it would have to spin up if it was!

The program I'm opening is on the SSD, the page file is on the SSD, the OS is on the SSD.

where did you install said program from?

From an exe saved on one of my HDD's. Does that make a difference? No program data at all is on the HDD.

sometimes it does, it is "the installation path". if it bothers you this much, it's time for regedit32 . . .

wait why do you even shut off the HDD in first place?

it's better for the HDD life to just leave the HDD spun up. Only shut down the HDD on laptops where every watt counts.

Where did he say he shut off the other hard drive?

Seems crazy that this hasn't been answered yet.

", I hear one of my hard drives spin up,"

Either one of his drives is dying or the drive was shut off.

Nonsense? Care to explain? If HDD is powered on, it sounds like spin off and PC will seem to freeze for a little while when the drive is detected.

Why would that be nonsense? Windows is set to automatically shut your hard drives off after 20 minutes, you know.

It's rather redundant if they aren't noisy; a hard drive will live longer if it's on all the time rather than spinning up/shutting down ever so often.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

It's not a set pattern of which programs, obviously it's just when the HDD has spun down (if that's the right term).

Sometimes it does it with firefox, CCleaner, and the Intel SSD toolbox - all of which are installed on my SSD.

So it's best to keep the hard drives spinning the whole time?

How can I do that?
