I've recently decided to take on the challenge of building a computer by myself. This is the first time I've done anything like this and I have no experience at all, I've picked some parts off of newegg and I wanted to ask you guys if the parts would work well together. I've read up on computer parts but that's about it so if I'm missing something or if something isn't gonna work, please tell me. I'm mainly going to be using this computer for gaming and movie watching. (I'm not sure what to post in terms of specs so I'll post everything that seems important, sorry if it seems messy )

Everything is compatible, but I do have some input:
mobo. Cheaper, works well. Intel boards are known to lack in features and hardly overclock.

cpu cooler & mounting bracket. You're gonna want some extra cooling.

PSU. Cheaper. You don't need a 750W PSU.

RAM. You'll want at least 4GB ram

Also consider stepping up the GPU to a HD5870, HD5770 or GTX260

EDIT: SATA DVD Burner. SATA > IDE.

Yeah, no point in getting an i7 then sticking a tiddly graphics card like the 9800 that an E2200 could max out.

Perhaps drop to the i5, then get a GTX260 like max said?

Yea I see your point, I didn't notice that the 9800 series was dated (came out like 1.5yrs ago or something right?) while the motherboard was fairly new (bottlenecked? Sorry if I got the terms wrong, noob here )
What do you guys think of this then?

the SATA DVD Burner max recommended,
a 600W PSU (I looked under the specs of the GTX260 and it needed 500W, I decided to go above that just in case)?
4GBs of RAM
and the same HD and case
P.S. I don't get the mounting bracket is used for though, could you clarify?

PSU requirements are vastly overstated. A good quality PSU with a relatively low rated output is way better than a cheap one with a high rating. Cheap PSUs are just asking for trouble. Still stepping up to this is a good idea

P.S. I don't get the mounting bracket is used for though, could you clarify?

There are hardly any CPU coolers out there that are compatible with i5 CPUs. Intel changed the way the cooler is mounted vs. LGA 1366 (core i7) or LGA 755 (Core 2). With the bracket I linked, you can install that cooler on an i5 CPU

Yes.

I try to get boards with 10 ports. I typically use all of those - with 2 of the ports used for eSATA so I can pick and choose which of my other hard drives to use.

EDIT: In fact with my RAID card for my external RAID box (dual SATA 2 interface) I am currently using a total of 11 SATA ports.

My mobo was like £25 and it has I think 7 sata ports. They don't take up much room, so it's easy to fit them all on right.

Check the link, no IDE. I have a board (granted it's an OEM board) with no IDE as well (but a floppy connector for some reason). IDE is truly becoming legacy hardware and less and less boards will have it soon.
