With all of the holiday deals around, I guess now is as good a time as ever to upgrade my computer.

What I already have:
GTX 260
700W PSU
CD Drive
Sound Card
500GB HD (I would love to replace it with a one TB1 if my budget would allow)

What I would like to get:
i7 (what's the difference between this one and this one? The second one seems a lot better for just about the same price...)
6 (or more)GB of DDR3 RAM.
1TB HD (I could live without a new HD if I needed to, but I would love to have it).
Motherboard capable of holding everything. I would like to have SLI support, however it's not needed.
A case (I haven't looked around much, but this case is on sale for black Friday for a nice price).
I'm also going to need Windows 7 64bit, would there be any downsides to buying an "OEM" one?
(Did I miss anything?)

Budget is around $900 (I could possible go higher if needed, lower is always great).

Also, I have never built up a computer from the ground up, I have changed out parts and moved things around. Is there anything more complex then plug and play? My main worry is with the processor, I have heard about thermal paste on something, it worries me.

Thank you in advance for any help.

1st is Socket 1366, 2nd is Socket 1156

1366 has a foreseeable upgrade path, 1156, not so much. 1366 can do multiple x16 PCIe channels, 1156 cannot

Just put the paste on this side, not the other side. There's a thread about how not to do it somewhere, I sadly don't have the link. (someone who's been here longer please link the one where the guy locked down his CPU with the paste on the bottom)

And get a cooler like this, especially if you want to try overclocking the CPU

Thank you both for the help.

I don't want to download windows 7 because I know a few people who have downloaded it and have had a several OS related issues. No thanks, would rather spend the money and not have to worry.

After looking at the link, I'm really glad I posted this because if the instructions where not good I could have seen my self doing that.

I don't plain on getting a new GPU until NVIDIA comes out with DX11 cards and they drop in price some.

This is what I have picked out at the moment:

Yes, I know it's over my price limit by a good bit, but I should be able to make it work.

Do I need the thermal compound or will the processor/cooler come with it?

Any thing need to be changed?

Again, thank you for the help.

ahh... that brings back memories....

Anyway, i'd suggest getting Arctic Silver. Yea, sometimes thermal stuff comes on the stock coolers, but the arctic silver stuff is so much better... Again, just be sure to read, follow, and understand all instructions...

Most CPU coolers come with paste pre-applied--save yourself a headache and just use that.  (Make sure to check, though)

Well now you know someone who's downloaded multiple OS's (XP, Vista, about 4 copies of 7) and never had any problems

The cooler you picked will most likely have paste on it, but it's always a good thing to have, especially for only $6.

I'd use Case instead. My Li Li is ftw!
Also, same RAM as mine a few bucks cheaper. Has an additional 10% off with that promo code aswell.

The Scythe Mugen 2 comes with some really good paste, i havent needed to change it despite it being on there for quite a while now.
Fucking brilliant CPU cooler, only downside is the size, the thing is absolutely huge, so make sure your motherboards secured enough to support the weight and that it will fit in the case, it's a good 20cm+
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.
