How can I find the IP address of a device?

I've got this "device" it's hard to explain what it is, it's kinda like a router though and it's not pinging on the IP I thought it was on. How can I find out what it is?

I don't think there's a command I can run, but I thought I remembered someone telling me about a program I can use for this kind of thing.

The other thing is, it could be on one of two subnets (192.168.181.x or 192.168.1.x) and I'm not 100% sure which it is.

I can't reset it, like I said it isn't a router.

I'm sure there's a way to do this I'm just not sure how.

Even just a macro should do it, there's only 512 addresses it could be, but how can I know which one replied without watching it do it?

I don't about windows, but in Linux it would take 5 minutes to write a shell script to do that.

Maybe if you told us what it is, we could help you. NAS? Switch? Access Point?

You could try using Wireshark to look at all network packets. If the 'device' is broadcasting then you'll see some of it's packets. If you can eliminate all the other network devices, then you can figure out which IP belongs to your hidden porn storage machine.

Edit: You said it could be on two different networks, so you'll have to connect to each of this and look for the packets. Plain old broadcasts won't cross through a router and on to another network.

It's basically an RF receiver, but not for AM/FM radio or TV.

Wireshark only collects packets, nothing more. It is not illegal, but taking login information and cracking someone's accounts is.

Exactly. Things like IM traffic and net messages are easy to read, anything beyond that is hard work. They might get pissed on their own machines since it installs win pcap.

It wasn't showing up with wireshark, in the end I found it with a program called NetPing. I just entered the start and end address, and it pinged everything in a couple of seconds.
