In my state there are a few levels of EMT before you can be called a Paramedic.

Anybody here friends/family with a Medical first responder?

Its a career that really interests me. When you arrive on the scene people get out of your way and let you do your work, and it could result in saving someones life.

Would you not rather do something that results in taking someone's life?

If you become an EMT I will never come to your state or any states bordering your state.

If you join the military as a 68W (medic), the first 1/3rd of the medic school will give you your EMT-Basic certification.

Here in Montana we've got;

EMT-Basic
EMT-Intermediate (aka EMT with Endorsements)
Paramedic. (which I are one)

I'm just a Volunteer Paramedic, we don't have a paid ALS/BLS service. Also even if I wanted to be a paid 'medic it doesn't pay nearly the same as what I get paid now.

I got my EMT-B cert. while in the Marines (night classes), then got my Paramedic cert doing the same thing, took for fucking ever.

it does get alittle bit interesting when you're trying to revive a 9month old child and the mom is going ape shit next to you.

Do you subdue the mother with a swift punch to the throat?

Today at work some clumsy twat fell over and decided to laugh his head off while lying belly-down into the ice. A young-ish girl (~16) came behind him, tripped, fell and landed her chin on the back of his skates. The blade on his skates went right up into her mouth. I was so shocked I stuttered on the radio for emergency services. I don't think I've ever seen something so horrible.

Isn't it your job to prevent stuff like that from happening?

Yeah, he was supposed to dive onto the ice and catch her.

And fuck me Irish, that's awful.

I was talking about making the kid get up rather than lie there catching 16 year olds on his heels.

I'm sure had he been lying there for 10 minutes he would have done, I'd assume in this case it was a brief thing because ice is cold.

My brother in law is a firemaan/paramedic.

His dream is to be on a sar team specializing in vertical rescues.

If you go there you will see many gruesome deaths and recover many mangled bodies from car crashes.

I've seen alot of unforgettable images thanks to car wrecks and other violent deaths.  thats the downside.

When you have managed to revive a small child, then they start to cry.. thats the upside

Anybody know a good, time-compressed class for EMT-basic?
I've got about 2 months of vacation, and would like to learn some better medical skills (but not take the entire 2 months!)

Jesus Christ I live in New York...

On topic:

Neighbor is a paramedic and my brother works in the Emergency Room as a tech (hes in college atm though to be a PA). Not sure about the specifics, will see If I can find out (the neighbors gone most of the time so just gotta catch him when hes here, my brother might know though he rode with ambulances briefly).

EDIT: Apparently (copy paste)
The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services offers certification at the following levels:

    * Certified First Responder (CFR)
    * Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
    * Advanced Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (AEMT-I)
    * Advanced Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care (AEMT-CC)
    * Advanced Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (AEMT-P)

http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/training.htm

I know the HVCC program is half decent and pretty easy, other than that no idea (and I only know that because I live near there in Troy, so w/e)

Here's a compressed course;
http://www.nols.edu/wmi/courses/wemt.shtml
(180 hours, 1 month long, gets your EMT-B, focuses on wilderness scenarios but still hits the EMT curriculum)

Old SF Medic I know suggested it to me a while back.
