The Onkyo takes the sound processing away from the iPod and uses it's own DACS, which would be of a higher quality than that found in the iPod. Alpine do the same thing with their iDA units for the in-car market.
Not all iPod docks will do this, it actually extracts the digital signal and I believe it has to pay Apple for the software to do this.

Meh. I don't do anything Apple-related, so I wouldn't know. Either way, you end up with a 128kbps file being exported to speakers-->shit sound.

Its just a transport. You will still need a quality DAC to convert digital to analog. I you really need/want a transport then this would be my recommendation if you can afford it ofc: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speak … p;cl=us,en
