All the professor has told us is that it only needs to be a mere 3 pages long and that we can write about anything discussed in class... That's it. So it's kind of difficult getting some footing here.

Today in class (the second-to-last lecture) we talked about three different options for a company in choosing whether to purchase computers and have to pay for maintenance, lease computers, or use a time-share computing center; and which options would be the most cost-effective depending on how much time you're going to be needing a computer.

So, I was thinking of writing about how companies make their decisions regarding purchasing computers, hiring IT people, etc., and figure out how to deal with the rapidly increasing usage of computers in our culture, as well as dealing with how easily computers become obsolete. Anyone know any good places to search (besides Google and Wikipedia of course)?

Getting started is the toughest part since it's so open-ended. And any other topic suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

I suggest you also do a cost/benefit analysis.

And tell us the name of the course you're doing ffs.

Yeah, probably should've included shit about what the course is about. And C/BA would be difficult since I'd have to look up solid numbers and do a bunch of calculations and wouldn't have much to write on

The name of the course is "Engineering Economy".

Not really.

You've got three different options for the company.

Maintenance.

Lease.

Time share.

He wants you to show which is more cost-effective depending on how much time you're going to be needing a computer.

So, if you're going to be using the computers a lot, the maintenance is likely to climb. Hardware can break down from over use. It can need to be upgraded (depending on whether the applications become more intensive).

If you lease the computers and need to upgrade, you might be constrained by a contract and locked into a specific hardware spec.

If it is time share you are at the whim of the centre, which could even upgrade beyond what your apps can handle. eg you need a Win95 machine, which these don't have. Only 98.

The cost/benefits analysis doesn't have to be a nominal figure.

Right, that's what I was planning on expanding on. I've just gotta find some articles and resources to check out. I'm wondering if there are any tech blogs or something like that. I guess I'll come across some good stuff after a lot of Googling.
