What is Google Public DNS?
Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.
To try it out:
Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers

My DNS server that i used to use is... to put it nicely.... FUCKING SHIT. It can take 5-6 seconds to resolve any website. I tried open DNS, but the results were varied. Some where half a second... others... close to 15.]

So today i changed to Google's open DNS. And wow. It's quick.

Also, what kind of internet god gets 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4..... srsly.... Who'd they have to kill

According to their blog post, Google Public DNS uses continuous record prefetching to avoid cache misses- hopefully making the service faster- and implements a variety of techniques to block spoofing attempts. They also say that (unlike an increasing number of ISPs), Google Public DNS behaves exactly according to the DNS standard, and will not redirect you to advertising in the event of a failed lookup.

Guess they were right. But there are questions about Google's true motivations behind knowing every site you visit...

Soon they'll have a profile of everyone on the planet, and it'll be just like Eagle Eye.

Wow, noticeable speed boost.

Downsides to this? Are they legally allowed to do shit about what sites we go on?

who cares.  dns maps an ip to a name.  this is not the cure for cancer, so i'm not overly excited.  if your isp isn't providing a fast dns service, they are doing it wrong.

your a small fish in a big ocean.  the only info they will have from you are lookups you make that aren't already cached.  not a whole lot of info for them to have.  besides, you are talking about literally millions of lookups a second.  unless some law enforcement agency is targetting you, they don't give a shit about your pr0n.

Hmm, quite a bit speedier, even on a quick, small bandwidth whoring site such as BF2s.

Only question is this: Would it affect the static IP that I have set up on my computer?

(I may be wrong, but)

The IP address is only for identifying the computer, the DNS is seperate. So no.

Why would it?

It's just a different server doing your IP/address lookups.

you can test it out but if too many people jump on Google's DNS is gonna slow down, it all depends how your current DNS is, the one ur ISP provides.
