what is the big todo about dns?  do other isp's really suck that bad?  if they do, just host your own dns service.  anyone can hold a forward lookup zone on their own system if they want.  all dns does is resolve a host name to an ip addy, and cache's the result.  every so often it refreshes the cache with a new lookup.  its really not complicated, and i can't imagine how you could configure it to fuck up (at least, if you aren't trying to )

if you don't have a problem with your dns service, there is no reason to change it unless you are just trying to learn some shit.

Was using my router as a DNS server, but since switching to google's DNS server the time it takes to ping websites is cut in half.

Some ISPs use a shitty connection with a DNS server....

Or like my old one.. it doesnt cache.
EDIT:

Also:

Privacy

What information does Google log when I use the Google Public DNS service?

Google Public DNS complies with Google's main privacy policy, which you can view at our Privacy Center. With Google Public DNS, we collect IP address (only temporarily) and ISP and location information (in permanent logs) for the purpose of making our service faster, better and more secure. Specifically, we use this data to conduct debugging, to analyze abuse phenomena and to improve our prefetching feature. After 24 hours, we erase any IP information. For more information, read the Google Public DNS privacy page.

Is any of the information collected stored with my Google account?

No.

Does Google share the information it collects from the Google Public DNS service with anyone else?

No.

Is information about my queries to Google Public DNS shared with other Google properties, such as Search, Gmail, ads networks, etc.?

No.

Weird, apparently I can't get a response from their DNS server? Could it have something to do with my university's network, or is there no way they could prevent that?

they can use their edge firewall to block outgoing dns requests on port 53, thus making their dns server the only usable one on campus.  not sure why they would want to do that unless they want to monitor it for some reason.

Probably so that way they can monitor and stop pirating....

Yeaaa ... this is definitely a bit snappier. I have a 8Mb/s cable connection (actual speed), and I am using my EEE PC via wifi and I just put the DNS servers into the settings and it does seem a bit faster. I suppose the processor is bottlenecking it to an extent, but I have noticed a speed increase.

Does this stop BF2S loading for ages or is that just our shitty country?

if I wanted to try this on windows 7, do I put the adress in the tcp/ipv4 or the tcp/ipv6 settings or in both? oh, and what's the difference between those two?

They have a guide on the Google page itself, you use the TCP/IPV4 settings. Here's the link:
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html
Just scroll down a bit.

I already don't use my ISP DNS and I'm glad Google is doing this but I'd still like to keep my concerns separate.
