Help building new PC

Alright I've been planning to do this for quite some time, however, time, money, and being a noob at this (never built my own before) has made me put this off until now.

The goal here is to keep this PC under $1,000, so I'm not trying to build the most epic gaming machine ever. Also heat and electricity usage are an issue. I'd like to keep it to a minimum, or the very least not excessive, because my room can get hellish in the summer (for me). Here is the current hardware I've selected, but I'd like opinions and suggestions from the experts around here.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0GHz Black Edition
GPU: XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770 512MB
Mobo: ASUS M4A78 Plus AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
HD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower W0221RU 650W ATX
Total so far: $673.84

Questions:

What RAM should I get? Not looking towards crappy value ram.

Is my PSU adequate, or am I a bit overkill? I don't plan on overclocking anything.

Suggested fans, case, sound card? Other than that... is everything ok? Everything seems to be compatible.

My last question is where can I build this? There is nothing but carpet in my house except in my garage, however, it's a bit nippy in Montana right about now I'm just worrying about static.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yea, but mainly anything better than my old PC which had a AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 2.4ghz CPU and a Nvidia 7800 GS GPU with 2 gigs of ram.

1k$ Very nice rig. Lower wattage PSU would be enough, but the newegg didn't seem to have very good selection from Corsair at lower wattage range. The costs can be trimmed down if you feel like that is too pricey.

After thinking it over, I'm going to go with Panzer's suggestion for the most part. The Intel build seems to fit my needs the best, and the money I save with the AMD 940 just isn't worth it. I'm keeping the Radeon HD 4770 512MB, Thermaltake PSU, and getting a creative sound card.

Ok but I still have a few unanswered questions. Can I build this in a room with carpet and not worry about static? And what version of Windows 7 should I get? Other than that, I'm good to go.

I wouldn't pick the 4770 as a way of cutting corners, the 5770 is dx11 and much more powerful than that one. Also the Asus sound card should be a better choice. As well as the corsair PSU actually. If saving money is the reason behind the choices there, Panzer can probably cut the corners better in other places.

But how much more of a hog is the 5770 over the 4770? What also makes the Corsair PSU better than the Thermaltake one? I looked at the ASUS card and I don't really need it, the Creative will do just fine.

The only thing you have to do about static is be sure to touch a metal part of the case before you start handling any electronic components.

Do this a few times throughout the build process or any time you feel you've shuffled your feet across the carpet.

Well... I suppose the extra 60 dollars might be worth it, being that it is DX11.

It's definitely worth it. If you're looking to save money, drop it on the CPU. You only need anything above a C2D if you're into movie rendering etc.

Well I guess it's pretty much settled then. I'm going to have to order in phases, and find a good place to build.

A C2D will be fine for gaming. Games are done mostly on the graphics card. Currently, your setup is weighed towards the CPU, should be the other way.

Oh wow, I just looked at prices. Turns out something like an E8600 would be a lot more expensive than an i5. Yeah, go with what Panzer said, it's better and cheaper than any C2D build I could put together.

Go with what Panzer said. Don't get the 4770, it'll be underpowered for the money you're spending. Get the 5770, or if your budget can stretch, 5850.

If you plan on overclocking that CPU, you may want to do some research on that mobo and make sure it isn't using the Foxconn socket.
