While guesstimating post Xmas prices, what could be reasonably done with about £800 (GPB)?

I use my PC for media (lots of, so storage is nice), and i'f it was quicker all-round, also for more games. I don't really do anything like photoshop etc.

Part on this PC you could reuse (but don't feel like you have to);

500w stealthxstream PSU (iirc)
hd4850 512mb
E7200
1gb random crappy ram
p35 mobo
250gb HD
a very broken case
2 dvd-rw's

Probably can't exceed 800squids, and has to be shippable to Northern Ireland. In prices include VAT and shipping is possible.

Seems like all you'd really need is another HDD or two, some more RAM, and maybe a processor upgrade and case if you really wanted.

As far as gaming goes, the 4850 should be fine. Hell, I've got a 3850 and I'm able to play MW2 with everything on High/Extra, max AA, 1280x1024. Could definitely use at least another GB of RAM though, maybe 3.

4gb ram
P5Q something or other
a decent CPU (this one blows)

and i <3 my lil 4850, but i'm thinking it'll be relativitly behind by say, this time next year. So wouldn't mind 'future-proofing' a touch.

Heh, I guess you'll have to wait for some of the others to chime in. I'm of a different mindset when it comes to computers. I've built 2 of my own so far, and they've both been ~$900-$1000 budget, nothing overkill, but with parts that would last me a while. I hate to upgrade, would rather just build a whole piece of awesome every 3-4 years.

Look into getting a Core 2 Quad processor if you really want to look into future-proofing for your needs.

The video card I would leave alone for now and when it comes time that you REALLY need to upgrade, the 5000 series will be much cheaper by that point and you'd be able to land a bargain on one.

Just upgrade the RAM and buy one or two larger hard drives. 1TB drives are pretty cheap, but if you want to use them for storage of pictures and videos, buy two and slap them into RAID 0.

Then if you want a new case, grab one on the cheap. Antec Three Hundreds are typically very affordable.

Well RAM is a must. Get 4GB of new stuff, and scrap the crappy 1GB you have.

If you really want to upgrade your GPU, a 5770 or 5850 will run anything out there.

Really, you have an alright setup as it is. What monitor do you have? If you're using it for media you might want to upgrade that. 24" Samsung, 1920x1080?

The only thing you really need (and that will breathe new life into your machine) is more RAM.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

4GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD for the storage. Could grab a CPU cooler and overclock if you wanted to... I think if you wanted to do a full upgrade you would be better off maybe saving abit more money first and waiting for new tech... but thats just my opinion.

honestly couldn't tell ya what the case is, was just some shit £20 thing to hold everything together.

Ok so more ram, 4gb? ddr2 or 3?

and i WANT a new mobo, mine is rather meh

a decentish cash and some fans for better airflow.

So with all that done, what decentish monitor could i be looking at? currently on a 17" widescreen (LG flatron)

DDR3 only works with i7/5. If you want an DDR3 you're going to need one - which means a new mobo also. Are you sure this isn't a comp build rather than an upgrade?

Incorrect, some p45, x48 and all 790i 775 boards support ddr3.

Tbh, if I had £800 for 'upgrades' and I had your current setup, I'd start rolling the ball on an i5 or PII 955 rig tbh. That'll quicken things up all round!

reasons for wanting a new mobo; this one has two slots for ram, and i heard 4x1gb is better than 2x2gb
reasons for wanting a new case; this one doesnt have one side, no front
reasons for *maybe* wanting a new screen (i <3 this one tbf); general prettyness

idk what to do new build would be sweet, but if a few upgrades would make my current build fine then that works too. more ram is the definite need tho

2x2GB will be just fine performance wise. You're limiting your upgrade options a bit, but I doubt you'll be getting more RAM than that for that machine anyhow.
