Cpu cooler doesn't fit. :(

Bought a new cpu cooler the other day to replace the stock one on my AM2 5400. New cooler is a xilence icebreaker (fairly cheap but had good reviews on ebuyer). This cooler doesn't fit at all, it says that it will fit an AM2 but the clamps just don't reach the plastic on the motherboard, its about an inch short. Is there anything I can do? Or have I just wasted my money and will need to buy another new one?

Usually non-stock coolers come with several different mounting clamps for different socket compatibility (so that the same cooler package goes to s939, AM2, etc.). Did the package have these "extra bits"?

I trust the side switch which locks the thing in place is not down?

No extra little bits at all, not even a set of instructions just a small amount of thermal paste in a tube. The side switch is not down, they just don't get anywhere near reaching.

EDIT: Got a bit bored when supposedly studying so i took apart the cooler, found that the clips were caught on the inside of the cooler so they wouldn't reach, took it apart further and sorted it all out. Now it fits and i'm very pleased with it and myself.

Unless you meant that the mounting assembly is the same, then I understand what you mean.

Coolers from 939 era are not often compatible with AM2

Words cannot describe the feelings I'm feeling for those AMD plastic holder thingies. They're worse than the bloody socket 478!

Well my S939 and AM2 stock coolers fit on each other.

yeah if your using the stock retention method (a cooler that clips onto the notches) they are the same (i've had am2 coolers on 939 and vise versa) it's only if your using a bolt through that they are different as 939 has 2 holes and am2 upwards has 4.

Ah, I see. All the aftermarket coolers I've used for AMD have used the stock retention bracket.
