Intel 1.6 GHz Pentium M
HDD    40 GB
Internal Memory    512MB

Realtek AC '97

The Story
This computer has been a trusty companion ever since it was taken into use as a work laptop in 2005, beyond it's retirement in August 2008 and now as a workhorse that I take with me anywhere I feel like taking it, to band jam sessions (It's got Cubase installed), travel, the gf:s place, where ever. After all it has all a man needs, Wireless, DVDRW, a screen and a keyboard. More than enough for pronz entertainment, bf2s, FB and the occasional round of good ol' Ghost Raccoon (d-uh, and you though I couldn't spell it). I will not go into the following issues:

- Cracked lid halfway through the middle
- Loose battery with only one hook holding it in place
- Moar RAM needed
- Dried up coffee in the DVD-Drive
- Loose Home-button

While I can fix all of those with duct tape, crazy glue, a trip to the PC store and Mr Muscle, there's one issue that needs to be fixed before I'm tackling the above:

The Problem
As you may have guessed by the title spoiler, it's the audio. Something's terribly loose and it's driving me mad. At startup, one of the following things may or may not happen:

- Boot loop, no startup
- System boots, onboard audio not found, drivers not available. Reinstall drivers, reboot, works.
- System boots, XP welcome sound plays at double speed like a chipmunk. Normalizes after that
- System boots, XP welcome sound rattles, a punch on the PC fixes things or makes it rattle more
- System boots, XP welcome sound rattles and freezes, sounds like an 8-bit Nintendo explosion, such as in Life Force.
- System boots, XP welcome sound changes pitch (with rattle) like it needs an exorcist. Hitting the computer either fixes it, or the pitch shifts whenever touched.
- System boots, everything's fine. (10% of the time)

I found no schematics of the lappy in question, can I fix this myself? I'm not ready let go of this old friend, not yet.

So please bf2s, fix my crappy lappy!

End.

It did spring to mind at one point, but I dismissed the idea until further notice. I can find numerous other ways to drink spend such money than to put it on a laptop which I only seldom use.

Anyone with a real idea?

It's probably some filtering for the sound chip that's failed (such as a capacitor falling off or breaking), rendering it unstable. I doubt there's a whole lot you can do about it aside from getting an external sound card.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

You know what's weird? It's that while everything says "hardware issue", I decided to say fuck it, format C on the travel-lappy (since nothing important is was on it anyway that isn't backed up somewhere else) and install Ubuntu. It's not like I'm going to game on this piece of shit now am I? And you know what, so far, so good! The audio works fine, no issues as of yet.

As a sidenote, I did do a clean install of XP Pro to recheck, but the issue was still there, so then I resorted to Ubuntu.

Sidenote 2: While I was writing this, the OS crashed, lulz. But it came back to it's original state, I didn't even lose this text I was in the middle of writing. Dafuck.

But yeah, seems to work without any problems. Did I just perform an exorcism on this PC? Are old PC:s sentient creatures? Is this a coincidence and this laptop will go back to it's destroyed state soon? Is this a computer version of Awakenings?

I am error.

from what i've seen, with this codec half the time it's driver/software (the p.o.s. realtec "soundwave" or whatever they're calling it). sorry i missed this sooner . . .
