It doesn't matter what the law says, states cannot secede for one simple reason:
One state or a small collection of states cannot stand alone from a fiscal and/or logistical standpoint.
A big problem I have with the teachings of America about the Civil War era, states that slavery was the cause of civil war. Slavery was not the cause and was not the motivation, the cause of the civil war was a desire to secede by the southern states based on partisanship. The election of Lincoln was more a factor than anything, comparable to the bickering of Republicans and Democrats today only much worse. The issue of slavery just happened to be the major issue of division at the time much like the issue of social healthcare today. A little known fact is that the southern states were actually in talks to abolish slavery on their own at the time but due to the outset of war, slaves were needed for the war effort. The emancipation proclamation was little more than an "official" release of slaves from federal territories (remember, the north had no control over the south during the war) and was thought that it would possibly inspire slave rebellions in the south.
It is a well known fact that military victories were NOT the deciding factor in southern defeat more so than the fact that most all of the weapon manufacturing plants, clothing manufacturing facilities and most importantly shoe factories were located in the North while most of the cash crop industries and commodity production was located in the south. Commodity's are nice for a robust economy, but not so much for a war effort. This is apparent in the simple observation and understandings as to the purpose of the union sea blockades, which were mainly to stop the south from importing war materials from countries such as Britain and France, more so than to defeat the CSA navy. While victories and losses on the field of battle determined the positions of the armies the real deciding factor that determined the outcome of many of the battles was simply, the lack of proper outfitting for the south. An army can only do so well with worn out uniforms, worn out shoes and second rate rifles. I've heard from many different people, including several former teachers of mine, that the reason the CSA wore gray uniforms was because they were actually faded blue uniforms that had been worn when the North and South were still one country and only became the official colors because the south had no way to produce new uniforms. Of course, I don't know how true that may be, it seems to make perfect sense.
The same is the case today. The main reason I find shit like this so retarded and all of this talk about seceding, no matter what kind of legal bullshit is behind it saying whether they can or cannot, is simply misinformed and highly uneducated smack talking. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, fuck even Alaska, it doesn't matter, cannot survive without the support of all the other 49 states. While there may be a lot of oil refineries or defense industries or computer factories or whatever, those businesses and assets are run from other states, supported logistically by other states, and in some cases owned and operated by the federal government. If these states, or ANY state for that matter were to seceed, these assets and industries was cease to produce and the state would wither on the vine like a melon detached from the stalk.
