My MP3 player broke, so I would like a new one.  However, my current phone is one of those free Razr's, so I need a new phone as well.  So, it's either an MP3 player, or a phone.  My budget for an MP3 is $150, which is also the price of the 8 GB iPod nano.  My budget for a phone is ~$100, notice the ~, which means it can be more or less.  The thing is, the phone has to be able to function like an MP3 player.  So, what's more worth it:

~$100 phone with MP3 player capabilities

OR

$150 iPod Nano

Don't phones play MP3s too?

If you choose an mp3-player, I'd recommend Cowon. The iAudio 7 shoudn't be more than 100$.

If you go for a new mobile that can play mp3s, you might want to consider a sony-ericsson. I've had good experiences with them. I'm using a w705, should also be around 100$

Sit down.
Remove all distractions.
Don't get up until you've decided.

There, did I help?

PS Doesn't this mean you have ~$250 budget for a combined phone/MP3 player?

Yeah, but are there drawbacks to using your phone as an MP3 player as opposed to a real MP3 player?

Not that I know of. Its harder to find a good sounding phone than an mp3 player so you would have to listen to a lot of phones if they will let you (they do here). Besides its better to have one device in your pocket than two.

I would say the only potential drawback would be the battery life. But if you're OK with that, then no worries.

If you just want a phone that is an mp3 player and does nothing else fancy besides that, look into Sony Ericsson. The Walkman phones are the best on the market and you'll be hard pressed to find something better. The good part is that the memory is also expandable. Though you should look on SE's website at the various phones and check to see just how much extra memory they can accept (some of them have firmware that may only support up to 8GB, so be aware before you buy; also check to see if the phone has a new firmware available and how much memory it supports with the new firmware).

HOWEVER, considering you're coming from the USA, I think you're going to be hard-pressed to find a good SE, ESPECIALLY if you're on Verizon. If you're on Verizon, I say go with the mp3 player. If you're with a GSM carrier, go with the SE.

Honestly I was/am disappointed with my W910i I bought a year and a half ago. Its was supposed to be high end in the Walkman family but a 50€ Sony MP3 player beats it in sound quality. Things may have changed since then but be sure to hear it first before you make the purchase.

My friend has (iirc) something from the 800 series and he likes it. He has an iPod Nano now, so obviously he uses that, but nonetheless. I think a dedicated mp3 player is always the best way to go regardless.

yeah, Phones are gonna sound a little worse as an MP3 player... but unless your an audiophile you probably wont care.

If you have to pay full price your probably fucked. Even basic phones are not cheap. If you plan allows you to upgrade I would definitely go with a phone with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

It's just nice to not have to grab anything more then a pair of headphones. One less thing to carry around, especially one less piece of expensive electronics.

I would stick away from sony phones, for no other reason then the fact that they all use sonys own memory sticks and that means you have to pay twice as much.

I don't see how battery life is a draw back? I use my phone to play music over some computer speakers while working at school, and I can do it all day (6-8 hours?)

My sister had an W880, I have a Nano, both are pretty poor performing players Don't want to be a dick but its hard to find a really good portable player. You're probably right about a dedicated MP3 player, they are the best from my experience.

I personally don't find Sony's memory cards that expensive at all, in fact they're about the same as SD cards in many cases. There are companies that make generic branded versions of them, so that takes the cost away.

$11 for 8 gig from a fairly respectable brand.

For that price I can only find a 4 gig memory stick.

No kiddin? Hmm ... prices are a lot different than they are here. Though I haven't checked in a while, so my information can be out of date.

I checked 16 gig cards after, and prices were closer between the two... but on 8 gig, price difference is pretty huge.
I really dislike sony for being so stubborn with those damn cards.
