problem - trying to fix a friends comp and it wouldn't start in safe mode (just restart on itself after about 5 seconds into the safe mode load). It started in normal mode just fine but I wanted to go into safe mode to run a full system scan. Stupidly I changed the boot.ini in msconfig to start in safe mode every time. Now when I try and start in normal mode it automatically tries to start in safe mode and restarts itself again... /facepalm.

solution? - I did some google'ing and one suggestion was to boot of the XP disc and run repair. Fine and all but I don't have the XP disc. I tried to torrent a copy (mods: I feel like this is okay since I already have XP just not the disc and all I'm doing with it is trying to repair, not steal a copy of the OS) but when I try to boot from the disc it says "checking hardware config" or something like that then just goes endlessly blank, no restarting or anything, just hangs.

Any help at all? I really want to be able to get back into windows. If I can find a legit copy of the XP disc I think I would be okay but I can't. Any useful ISO's I can use?

Run ubuntu or another linux distribution, create another partition to install that OS and boot from it.

Then edit the .ini file back. Uninstall or keep ubuntu.

can you change the .ini file while in ubuntu?

Can't see why not.

So long as you know where it is located, you can edit .ini files using ubuntu and the file won't be in use, because you're booted from another OS.

If you have any doubts, there's some great forum members at http://ubuntuforums.org/ who you could ask.

perfect! worked like a charm. ubuntu being as awesome as it is, i didn't even have to install it, it just let me "try it out" so I could access the windows files.

now just the question of why when I start in safe mode it loads about a screens worth of drivers then an extremely quick BSOD flash then a restart. Every time i try and get into safe mode. Care to shed any helpful light on that? Just malware checks?

Now you've fixed the boot.ini, have you tried the XP disc and running repair?

Is there a specific driver it freezes on?

mmm k update:

boot from disc and ran repair (took FOREVER) but same thing happens when trying to boot into safe mode. Morpheus: seems to freeze on a driver called MUP.exe i think. (windows/system32/etc. etc.) It was the driver at the bottom of the screen just before the BSOD and reboot (I hope thats the one I should be looking at).

Also I ran a malware check and as I came back (comp is in another room) the screen had gone completely fucked (odd shapes on it, nothing visible) and I had to restart. Ill try again now that I successfully completed the repair and let you know.
