i got bumped up to business class for no apparent reason other than there was no one in business class... it was a 40% discount economy ticket, too.

anyone else had similar experiences?

Been upgraded, but not with airline travel -enjoy it.

my wife's a consultant, flies roughly 90 times a year. she's delta platinum, walks right on the plane, etc.
last time we flew together, i had to wait, but only a few - the gate agent said "enjoy your flight"

nah it didn't work like that. just before boarding (i.e. at the gate) they called my name out and gave me a new boarding pass with a different seat, business class.

i actually didn't realise at the time, it was only when i went up and asked... "er... when do i board with this seat?" and they shuffled me over to the business class lane XD

Trick is to get there incredibly early...on international flights check-in usually opens 6 hours before departure so get there first, ask for an upgrade and chances are you'll get one. Works every time for me

I've asked the same but not for my legs but something else. They didn't have a seat with enough room for me though.

Most memorable experience for this was being on the exit-row seat from Phnom Penh to Hanoi, where the Cambodian (I assume she was Cambodian) air hostess came over to us (my family) and asked if we were okay with the safety thing about taking down the door in the event that the plane makes an emergency landing etc. I just remember her heavy accent. T'was good fun none-the-less. Plenty of leg room too.

Oh... also. From Wellington to Auckland, I was in economy, but we were basically right at the front.. so we had about 2 metres of legroom. Was fan-fucking-tastic.

no we had to sit inside for 50 minutes (not that i was complaining)

it was weird, nothing like any other airline i've flown with.

ps. it wasn't just me, the two people next to me were also upgrades and i suspect most of the class was too

Get someone who works for an Airline in your family, then you get bumped up all the time. Business class? peh.

A lot of the time they will bump business men up above tourists etc. because if they like it they are more likely to use it again, rather than just think of it as a nice bonus.
