Intel Core i5 750

OCZ 4GB DDR3 1333
1TB 7200rpm SATA2 hd
GTS250 1GB
Gigabit Eithernet Lan
Cooler Master 500w power supply
Price: $800 CND

Brother's potential set-up:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
Asus P5KPL-CM mobo
OCZ 4GB DDR2 800
8800 GT
Gigabit Ethernet Lan
500w power supply w/12cm fan
Price: $540 CND, but that's including a GT220, and he'll be using his 8800 GT, so say...$440 roughly?

For me, I'll mainly be using it for gaming and 3d modeling/Photoshop.
My brother will mainly be gaming.

Feel free to mix and match if you think something would work better.

Edit: Budget wise:
Me: I'd rather not go over 800 if possible, unless something will last me considerably longer if I do.
Brother: Around 300-500

Well if you're only going to play TF2, only spend $600. No point in buying a powerful computer if you're not going to use it to it's full potential. If you do want to future proof your computer, then spend the extra money, but spend it right.

I would suggest a lesser CPU and perhaps a 5850.

Well I'll be using it for 3d modeling/video editing too, and I don't really want to run TF2 with shit graphics at 40 fps.

I'd also like to stick to Nvidia if possible, just because I've only used their cards.
Unless ATI has something a lot better for cheaper or something..

That motherboard is not compatible with DDR3 RAM.
I'd recommend a better processor, perhaps an e7400 if you were to purchase a 5770.

Also, it's $10 dollars cheaper to get a standard version of the 5770 and overclock it yourself.

Like I said, I threw it together quickly. Get the stock 5770, and DDR2 ram.

The 5770 is about in the same performance bracket as the GTX 260, but uses a lot less leccy, produces a lot less heat, and does DX11.
Quads are a waste of time for gaming. Nothing supports 4 cores well enough to warrent the extra cost.

if you go with the i5, get the gigabyte p55m ud4 before the ud2, better for OCing and a better layout. The sidways Sata ports are huge on the p55 mATX boards. Also it is crossfire sli capable for future upgrades. I went with it and am not dissapointed.

If you really do use those programs for some powerful rendering, etc. I'd say go for the quad or i5 setup.

But you've got to ask yourself, are you going to do enough of this to warrent the extra cost? Or can you wait an extra 10 minutes for a video to render?
