In the endeavour to get the balance right on my TV, i've been using a couple of BluRay's which i think have helped me set up my picture to the best it can be. I used:

The BBC series 'Life' on BluRay
Rataouille on BluRay

Using 'Life' i was able to compare real life colours, contrast and brightness. And after an hour or so of adjusting i was amazed at how much i'd improved the picture quality over the default settings. Incidently there is a good home theatre set-up feature in the 'Life' menus.

In using a film as defined as Rataouille it assured me my settings were good from 'Life', knowing that the process of making this film was so poured over, to make sure every aspect was near perfect for BluRay production.

So yeah, post the 1080p media you have used to set up your display.

I find that a proper calibration picture is the only way to go.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Most TV's are way off when they shipped. They are calibrated for maximum pop on the showroom floor. Generally speaking, after watching a movie for awhile at factory settings you develop eye fatigue. It will make you tired and can give you a headache.

I had a professional calibrate my XBR4. They have the proper equipment and will do it for a small fee. Certainly worth it.

the problem here is that every TV is different, even though they're the same model. Mind, I do the same as you, I cba to do it myself
