Right, the time has come to decide whether or not to go to university straight after high school, and if not, what to do in the gap year.

I am currently unsure if I want to take a gap year or not, but the university applications are almost ready, and will be sent before mid-January. I'll just say no to my place or apply for a postponing of it when accepted, if I indeed decide to take a gap-year.

Anyways, this thread isn't about whether or not I should go straight to uni, but rather what I should do if I DON'T. I want to do something somewhat rewarding. So, moving to Mallorca for a year and chilling is out of the question. I have however, thought about moving to France for a year and learning the language fluently. Alternatively, I've thought about what we call 'folkehøyskoler' - basically a year-long ski/sports school for people in gap-years..

Military is out of the quetion, as is moving to a poor country and building a school (yes, blatently put, don't call me selfish or spoiled, this is just not what I want atm).

I am open to taking some sort of 'simple' one year course at a uni. I'd love to travel abroad.

so, any ideas/recomendations?

Thanks <33

Travel.. yeah, but I sorta want to "settle down" somewhere and umm.. do something, ya know? Eg. move to france and learn french, take a maths course in Switzerland, do a economics prep. course in Britain. Doesn't have to be something stricly academic, but at least living somewhere for more than a month.

You dig?

Personally I would go skiing for a season. But traveling far parts of the world is equally good.

I am avoiding work. I can work after uni. If I were to do a gap year, I'd want to do something else, something I might not have the chance to do later.

Go straight to uni. If you spend a year out travelling you may find it really hard to get into the work ethic again. That way you can get all your education out of the way and enjoy travelling when you're a few years older and more mature.

This is bullshit. Working - Not for a stupid restaurant or bar - for a year is the most rewarding thing you can do, added to the fact that it looks brilliant on your CV. Travel after Uni, once you graduate - You'll have money from the year working and you'll want to get away from everything.

A GAP year is meant to motivate you for your Uni work or get some money behind you. Buggering off to France is just a dumb idea. If you want a proper travelling experience, you set it up with a GAP year organization and you go to Mexico or Japan and teach kids English or Maths. I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that though.

And France? Who the FUCK wants to learn French fluently? Most useless language in the world, tbh.

Work isn't about working, it's about maturing and learning how to work before you hit Uni. You'll be above your peers in both maturity and finances, and will most likely have learnt valuable lessons. Going to work after Uni is what everyone does, but if you have money behind you and have a solid CV (which you would if you've graduated + worked) then you can relax and go travel; have some fun, and then get a better job than the other grads because you've already learnt how to work.
