Actually, to a certain extent, he IS correct.

As Belgium is the Capital of the EU, the language that must be spoken on EU affairs is French and not English. Or the commonly accepted language, if you wish.

It's still a useless language because more people speak English, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Hindi/Urdu.

I should have said French is 'an' official language of business, not 'the' official language. It's definitely not useless.

Hindu/Urdu is worthless outside of the subcontinent. Invalid argument.

France is boring and the people in Paris are dirty assholes (from my own limited experience). Russians are cold-hearted dumbies and Russia is going nowhere internationally. Would have been good to learn 25 years ago. Spanish is good to learn if you plan on visiting 4 countries in the world (well 5 if you ever plan on visiting California). As he already knows English we can cross that off the list too. So in fact, you have listed 1 language of usefulness to an aspiring international dilettante, that being the one I already mentioned.

Jens, you should do something that will alter and shape your worldview. Binge on opiates and alcohol and bum around the US for a year. Trek across Patagonia. Go visit the Dalai Llama. Don't be a lazy uncultured swine and ski for a year, what fun is that?

Get a bit of work experience, having a menial job for a while is a good motivator to do well at uni, and work experience always looks good to an employer.
And if you're not already get fit, super fit if possible. Will stand you in good stead forever, and you might not get another chance once at uni, working, whatever.

Being ready for uni is a very personal thing, motivation and maturity is key. I appreciate your thoughts, guys, but only I really know my status in those two fields.. Some do better at uni after a gap year, others do better if they go straight forward. I am unsure, I'll dive down into myself a little closer to the acceptance dates.

I see your point, yours as well, Zimmer. You may have even convinced me.

To me, a year without school is really to break that annoying rhythm of half-assed work and then work my ass off the last minute.. I just don't have the self-discipline to start working on a project before the last minute, and I fear that this will haunt me when I get tasks that go beyond prepping for a high-school physics test..

I can see myself coming back motivated after a break. I do, after every summer. And, well, that lasts for a month maybe, before I fall into that aforementioned pattern.

once you break the rhythm of studying (however lax and lazy yours may personally be), particularly if you start earning some decent bucks, the allure of going back to spending money instead of earning it fades away. ive seen a few personal friends of mine who were top-rated university material end up just falling into a full-time career path because they liked earning money and having nice things / personal freedom so much. the student lifestyle is great but at the uni-age you're just as ready to take up the full-adult lifestyle, too. just be careful that this 'motivating' gap year doesn't turn into a year motivated towards moving away from hittin' the books altogether.

You don't seem to understand that that "annoying rhythm" is entirely different with work. You cannot compare work to school. If that's what's putting you off, then you're not thinking straight.

Work isn't the same as school. Far from it.

It will also give you a much better idea of what you want to do. As well as stop making you last minute/slap dash/lazy boy.
