Just don't step outta line and have the Chinese throw you into prison.

*stepping out of line means looking at a Chinese solider in Tibet.

Being ready for uni is a very personal thing, motivation and maturity is key.
To me, a year without school is really to break that annoying rhythm of half-assed work and then work my ass off the last minute.. I just don't have the self-discipline to start working on a project before the last minute, and I fear that this will haunt me when I get tasks that go beyond prepping for a high-school physics test.
I'd say your key task then is to develop a work ethic, something I didn't achieve until my MSc.

If you can do it there will be a big difference both in your results and importantly your enjoyment of the degree. Really unless you are deep down interested in the subject AND prepared to work solidly from day one I'd say don't do a degree. It will also prepare you for life in the world of work where you do have to work solidly 8hrs a day (or at least give the appearance).

Not sure what I'd suggest really, bumming around for a year and doing a bit of sport isn't going to cut it.

For me I spent time after my degree working as a building contractor. Getting out of bed at 6am 12 days out of 14, working 10-12 hour days, having the enforced discipline of not falling off ladders, not dropping tools on peoples heads and avoiding getting electrocuted does wake you up a bit. That and working with itinerant skinheads who actively wanted to get you into a fist-fight....

I really needed a year after A-Levels and before my degree, which for various reasons I coudn't have, good luck

You don't seem to understand that that "annoying rhythm" is entirely different with work. You cannot compare work to school. If that's what's putting you off, then you're not thinking straight.

Work isn't the same as school. Far from it.

It will also give you a much better idea of what you want to do. As well as stop making you last minute/slap dash/lazy boy.
nono, that's not what I'm saying.

I'm saying that to get out of that rythm, or lack of work ethic, it might be nice to take a gap year. Whether it's getting a job, getting a "casual" one year degree (maths, for example), or whatever.

And good point 'zique, that's one of the things that, umm.. "scares" me from getting a job. Losing what I have left of work ethics and motivation from an academic perspective.

Atm, a one year "casual" degree is the most tempting, if indeed I decide to take a gap year. Anyone know where one could get a degree like this, in, say, advanced maths? Or rather, where one would look to find information.

I'm open to anything, whether it's in England, Switzerland, France, whatever.

Mind, there's only a ~20% chance of me doing this, but I feel I should have this planned just in case.
