Ya, I was talking about this the other day. Someone mentioned the airlines wanted to keep people in their seats for the last hour of the flight, before approach. Like that's going to do anything? So the guy with the bomb or knife or whatever just gets prepared in the bathroom BEFORE lock down. Fuck all.

If they try this bullshit (though I imagine they would only do this on flights to the States, which would mean I'm fucked cuz that's where I'm from), and I have to go, I'm just gonna go in my seat. Fuck it. Let them clean it.

A few sections I'd like to highlight:
The authority has not made public the directive. But it said in a statement that passengers can expect to see extra security "at international airports such as increased gate screening including pat-downs and bag searches. During flight, passengers will be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing personal items, turning off electronic equipment and remaining seated during certain portions of the flight."

Individual airlines and airports will each interpret the TSA directive in their own way. But anecdotal advice suggests that passengers are not allowed to leave their seats for the bathroom or to access luggage during the final hour of any flight, nor keep blankets or pillows on their laps.
First paragraph is shit that should be happening already. They tell you all of this at the airport and when you get on the fucking plane. The second is absolute bullshit. See my last post.

There have also been reported bans on the use of laptops and MP3 players.
Ummm ... last I checked he wasn't trying to use Steve Jobs' latest asinine creation to take out the cabin crew. WTF, people?

OK, a full pat-down I can understand. I think we need to screw that and just get the full body scanners that the super-conservative right is getting pissed off at because the operator might see the shape of a tit. To hell with patting people down. Stick em in the fucking scanners and be done with it.

In-flight security rules have been eased after a two-day clampdown, airline officials familiar with the matter said Monday.

At the captain's discretion, passengers can once again have blankets and other items on their laps or move about the cabin during the tail end of flight. In-flight entertainment restrictions have also been lifted.

The airline officials spoke on condition of anonymity because federal safety officials had not publicly announced the changes.
Some common sense has emerged...

Captains are always the "king of the castle" on planes and ships. They--and they alone--are responsible for the safety of the passengers and crew.

Hang on, that attack was done from the dude's seat and in fact if passenger movement was restricted then Mr. Jasper Schuringa would not have been able to tackle the dude and other pasengers would not have been able to restrain him.

Don't you just love the knee-jerk "something must be done" crowd who immediately leap to the worst posible "solution"?

From the local news on the delay of 2 hours at YYZ to the U.S. :

"No carry on, no MP3 or game players. No laptops, all must go in checked luggage."
"Small purse's and baby diaper bags only."
"All passengers must remain in their seats for the last hour before landing. No blankets or pillows the last hour."

I experienced it today and am currently in Newark airport waiting for another chance to experience it again. The last hour of the flight is no leaving your seat, no items on your lap, no entertainment, no blankets, no pillows. The crew was embarrassed to enforce it and made it clear on the tanoy.

PS Newark airport rocks - the NJ transit train speeds you to midtown Manhattan in about 20 mins!

Muahahaha.  Epic fail for domestic US flights.  Any form of electronics in checked luggage disappears, period...

That's gonna go over really well with the families travelling with kids.

Do you need to go to the bathroom?

Please return to your seat, you're not allowed to stand! Taze him, he's wild!

I applaud the airline which isn't following suit.
