Here's the deal, the womans EEEPC904HA screen died. And I'm doubtful I can find all the warranty info etc etc, even the serial number it was all on a little piece of green paper in the original packaging which is long gone now.

Ok, she's got basic uses really. Youtube/Web browser opening the odd PDF file and listening to music. Need to be a Netbook/Laptop with atleast 160GB HDD. Also, Linux will be going on the machine to run a dual boot setup to practice for her school work.

Budget is max €300, I know that puts most laptops out of range, but bear in mind she doesn't need a particularly powerful machine, would like a laptop which atleast has 2GB of Ram and a decent enough screen size.

For a Netbook it's really the standard thing with 1GB of Ram and Win Xp with a 160GB HDD, I seen this Lenovo one which looks good. That's what I'm thinking so far.

Also, will need to use German website as that's where she lives; or something close by. Will be buying this pretty soon. Probably on Monday when I get a reply from the retailer about my warranty.

Edit: Also seen this hideous looking thing.

I would say go with a netbook, at that budget you can get a pretty powerful one.  If you're buying a Laptop on that budget it's likely you'll end up with a *lol* Celeron *Lol*

Edit: Didn't notice it was in Euros, in fact for 432 US you could probably get a decentish laptop, but I still think you get more bang for your buck at that price with a netbook.

Yeah, got for a netbook, look for the usual suspects, 160gb hdd, Intel Atom processor, 1 gb ram. My sister got an Acer for her Xmas which shipped with XP, pretty solid so far.

What's the real difference between it an the S10(linked in OP). Seems to be pretty much the same thing in white but €50 more. Is it just cause the screen is bigger?(Which tbh, might make it the one I'll go with).

What do you think of it? Having lived with it for some time.

I find the keyboard a bit too small for my MASSIVE hands. But aside from that, it's a dinky little bit of kit.

I find it to be one the most useful devices I own. The whole family loves it. Only the battery is on the downside since its only a 3 cell

Looks like it's between these 2 then...
Lenovo S12
Acer Aspire One

What would she benefit more from. I think the extra 2 inches screen(that's what she said ) would be better than the larger HDD, not to mention I don't like Acer personally and always hear great things about Lenovo. Also, she never even got close to filling the 160GB in the old EEEPC. Her only gripes with it was the small screen.

They're pretty much the same price, what you think guys?

Sounds like you should be looking at standard sized laptops instead of netbooks

It's hard to find a half decent laptop for €300 or less. This is all I found. No mention of an OS on it, but I can get an OS easily enough

If she has gripes about small screen size, get her a cheap monitor.  I've seen one for 100 bucks US

German website? www.alternate.de or www.alternate.at depending on what country she's living in. You can also try t-online-shop.de (also an Austrian version)

As far as the computer, go for an ASUS. My mom just got one of the Windows 7 models in the US and she loves the hell out of it. If you want quality and customer service, don't buy Acer. Too many horror stories about them. ASUS is much nicer as far as that stuff goes.

If you can't get the 904HA she has repaired, I seem to remember there being a website in the EU where you could buy replacement parts for the EEE PCs. Go over to www.eeeuser.com and check out the forums there and see if you can find it. Call ASUS and see what they can do for you, though. The serial number for the machine is surely on the bottom of it, I imagine you can get pretty far with that.

I'm trying the serial number that's on the battery tbh, there's no serial underneath the machine just the windows product key and another sticker with volt info or something.

Had to fill the RMA with Asus after all, did that and now have to wait for a reply.

Interesting... would have thought it was on there. It's not on mine, either. I imagine that they have your Windows product keyy in their database tied with your computer's serial number... You could always try that.

Well Asus approved my RMA of the Netbook and they're even going to collect it for me, never knew companies did that. Sounds awesome. Will let you guys know how it turns out, hopefully I won't need to buy something new. But must face the possibility I might -.-
