Hey Guys

So my 2007 rig is now 3 years old!

Time for an upgrade, looking to spend around $500

Specs:

Q6700 @ 3GHz
8800GTS 512mb
4GB 800mhz RAM
nvidia 650i mainboard
1TB + 250GB HDD

I'm thinking the video card and motherboard are going.

So far I've sorted out:

Gigabyte P45: $159.99 CAD
Gigabyte 5850: $325.99CAD

For a grand total of: $485.98CAD

just looking for some input
thanks

Why not a cheaper motherboard, like this one? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as … 6813128380

I don't believe so, I've read that you can only Crossfire it if they're the same architecture. For example, a 4850 and a 4830.

Here is an outdated chart, but it should give you an idea.

OOOOOh good point man.

Think I want the P45 still for whatever reason though lol, just looks more compatible/upgradeable.

Plus if you crossfired a 4830 and a 5850, you'd get the performance of 2x4830, not 4830+5850. The 5850 has to slow down to the pace of the 4830.

I have the gigabyte ep45 UD3P and i love it... very sturdy out of the box and it runs great
i have a q9400 that i overclocked from 2.66 to 3.2ghz with one click of a button with the gigabyte utility.
There are also a bunch of settings to do your own overclock settings in the bios.

I am a big fan of Asus but i bought this board because of the good things that i had heard
and i am a gigabyte convert now lol.

No point in buying a LGA 775 mobo. That tech is finally dead. Your current one will handle a 5850 fine. Save up that money.

I was fairly sure that was only the case for only nvidia SLi.

I thought if you crossfired a 4870+4830 lets say, they would both run at their proper speeds

Crossfireing different cards is just asking for trouble. Running 2 identical cards already has a bunch of problems.

Doesn't really matter. You may want to look into the warranty on each card if you care about those things. I don't. I replace the cards way before any warranty runs out anyhow

The second link gives a warrenty of 3 years, the first only gives you 2 years. Worth an extra $10 in my opinion. Make sure to register your card, remember.
