I saw 'The Road' a couple of days ago, the movie based on Cormac McCarthy's cult novel. It's a post-apocalyptic father-son tale about a journey South through the devastation of some unspoken cataclysmic event. I thought it was excellent - heart-breaking, grim, and very realistic. I don't think it would be to everyone's taste but if you like your movies to have real characters and dramatic depth I would recommend checking it out. It reminded me of Michael Haneke's film The Time of the Wolf
cult novel? facepalm
"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
That looks rather awesome.
McCarthy might be a big name best-seller now but his early work and reclusive personality will always see him and his work viewed as a cult figure in the fiction genre.haffeysucks wrote:

"cult" though, doesn't that seem a bit extreme? i dunno, when i think cult, i think harry potter/twilight-status hysteria.Braddock wrote:

Cult usually refers to a work that has a small but devoted following. Works that were never widely popular, but has a very strong following amongst the people who actually know about it.haffeysucks wrote:

Twilight fandom might seem more cult-like than that, but Twilight is too mainstream to have a "cult following" even if it's following is an actual cult.
I would never use the term cult to describe Harry Potter or Twilight, they're incredibly mainstream. 'Cult' generally implies a smaller, more dedicated following, usually outside the scope of the mainstream. It's a very loose definition though and open to interpretation.haffeysucks wrote:

Just watched this, was prety good but it's just depressing the whole way through.
Sexy. Might have to wait for the DVD, though.
okay, yeah, you're right about cult. just an old stereotype of mine. i do want to see this movie though, the book was very good.
