Huh?  BF2 won't work right if you have a Dual-Core CPU?  That is fucked up.
Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of is to disable the second core in BIOS setup.  I tried changing the affinity once, but don't know of a way to have it set every time you run the program.  There may be a command line option similar to setting it to run with /HIGH, but I don't know it.

OK, go here
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Tec … 06,00.html

scroll down until you see this if you are using XP

AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.

Those are the latest drivers for X2 processors, but then I am assuming you meant the X2 not the intel dualcore

and as for windows updates, Start>Programs>Windows Updates

Do you ever get random disconnections from server messages, I used to get them before I updated, and btw very very very good choice of processor there

Rusty - did that help?

Any of you guys have a link to the Windows dual core fix?  I installed the AMD one.

I have an OEM copy of Windows XP (that I paid $140 for!) and it is telling me that to even submit an email for the dual core fix (they don't post it?!?!) is going to COST ME $35!  unbelieveable....

I thought that using powerstrip (google it) can also do it for you, and may be better with performance than some weird patch.

Try a BIOS update?  I never had any problem with my setup... I run Athlon64 X2 3800+ and all I ever needed was AMD's processor driver.  Setting affinity was never much of an option to me since I was able to run it fine without any issue.  If you still desire a program to be able to set affinity, then I suggest googling for a program named "WinLauncherXP".  It's a small and simple little application but it does wonders for setting up programs with affinity settings.

I probably have missed something else since I didn't see any specs but it'd be nice to get an overview as to what's inside.

I have a 4200+ X2 and BF2 has never had any problems running (other than the occasional crash to desktop, but that's just BF2 :p )

By the way, to have the affinity automatically set each time a program is running, all you have to do is download this file: http://www.sejat.com/tools/imagecfg.exe into your system32 folder.  Then go to a command prompt and type:

imagecfg -a 0xn "c:\path\to\file.exe"

replace the "n" in 0xn with 1 or 2, depending on which cpu you want the program to run on, and your set.

hey rusty- i had a similar thread going - and other people had problems with antivirus - so definitely disable that, and your firewall before playing.  I just did a video card driver update (just came out and I did not know about it) from Nvidia, and that actually seems to be working for me....i have played about 5 hours without a problem, so the jury is still out, but I have NOT had to set the affinity to a single core since.......if you haven't already:

> Update your chipset drivers (Nvidia for me)
> AMD also has a hot fix for dual core processors.  if you need it I can find the link.
> Update your video card drivers (Nvida for me again)
> Update your motherboard BIOS drivers
> Disable virus and firewall.

These can all be downloaded.  I did all of this (even with a new machine, the discs came with 5 month old drivers) in parts, but now it seems to be working.

This is a Windows XP hotfix for dual core as well....this is the last one I did and I think this is the one that solved the problems I was having:
