Dual booting questions

I'm currently taking a Photoshop and a MIDI class at my local college. Both courses use Macs. While I could finish most of my work during the free open labs, I'd like to have the freedom to do some of it at home on my computer.

I'm currently running windows 7 on a 160GB hard drive.

E6750 C2D @ 3.2 GHz
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
2GB DDR2 800
160GB Western Digital SATA-II
8800GT 512MB SC

How would I go about installing mac osx on my computer, if that's even possible? I don't want to format unless it's absolutely necessary. How much space would i need for a new partition? The only programs installed would be Photoshop and Reason.

i have seen Bootcamp work on a mac, it allows XP to be installed on a mac.
i don't know more than that, because i don't own one.

I didn't look to hard, but seemed to be able to find Reason for windows.

Photoshop I am not sure about.

Yeah I know that lol I already have both. But I have to transfer my lab work via usb stick. Will it work properly going from a windows to a mac and back?

as long as it's the regular .psd and whatever reason uses, it should be fine...

In terms of Reason, though, you might also have to drag the related files with it, for example, the protools .ptf was just the "reference list" as it were, for all the audio samples in the file folders....

My photoshop professor said a USB drive formatted on a windows computer won't work properly on a Mac, is this true?

that is incorrect.

Windows usually formats USB sticks to FAT32...
if your OS can't read FAT32.... you aren't using a computer.

Mac defaults to HFS (or something), and Windows can't read it...

A quick google turned up: The Mac will read NTFS, but cannot write to it.

Format the drive in FAT32 on the PC and it'll work everywhere.

You can get a plugin for Mac's to read NTFS, they don't out of the box.

If you want to run OSX on a PC, you need to obtain a "hackintosh" build of OSX, google for it, there're guides and stuff about. it only works on some hardware though.

If you're only using PS and Reason, just install the PC versions, as long as you keep all the working files for the projects in the same folder, they should transfer perfectly fine between PC/Mac.
The OS actually doesn't make any difference, if you run into problems when moving it's your fault for not putting the files together, regardless of OS.

Yea, all my usb drives are FAT32... no problems transfering to a mac, but the one HFS drive i had to work with... what a bitch. couldn't even get my laptop to format the fucker to a real file system. but it 'just worked' on a mac......

Actually it allows any version of Windows to be installed on it.

Windows runs natively on Mac hardware. No virtualisation. Because Macs are just PCs with more restrictive hardware sets. Only reason it's so hard to get OSX running on a PC is down to driver issues (and Apple deliberately making it difficult).
