Was looking at the iPad at Apple's site and I got an iBoner. The question is do I really another device that is functionally so similar to the 4 laptops I own? iThink not
It usually ends up being right for them (Apple). Everyone doesn't have the same desires and wants. The consumer has plenty of options beyond Apple. The omg it's only because they are fanbois crap isn't entirely true.

Have you ever pulled out a laptop on a subway or bus? It sucks. I sure as hell don;t get 10 hours of battery life on my laptop. This device is for leisurely consumption. "Touch and go". I'm betting at least $100 off by christmas too. People seem to be forgetting the out the gate price is always high.

I would be much more interested if the HD space wasn't piddly.
I can't even cram any videos onto my 32g iphone because it's full to the brim with tunes. No room for your fancy new ipad apps or pretty videos or photos.

I don't believe the 10 hours battery life claim, tbh

I don't even pull out my phone out the pocket often enough to justify the price I paid for it. I see where you're coming from kmar but laptops with rotating screen have been available for years. Battery is a weak spot, true, but come on do people really watch movies on public transports? I honestly don't know how it goes down in teh USA

The latest one in our house gets well over 5 hours battery, and it's a netbook (Don't know why I wrote that.). There's no problem getting it out and using it.
I see a problem with this iPad (What the fuck is with the name, too?!), and that's people like to type fast. With a netbook, I have QWERTY and two hands.
With this, you gotta hold it with one hand and type with the other.

If you want to type with two hands on your netbook then you have to put it down. Same applies with the iPad

I see a definite use for this device like kmar. Airplanes, between classes, during class, chillin at your friends house, wherever. The size of the device itself is very convenient. I don't take my laptop to class mostly because it's just too god damn big and heavy. That's partly my fault for getting a big heavy laptop, but 1.5lb doesnt even compare to 5lb "light" laptops..Sup wrote:

If it's intended to be a mobile media center, it should have the space to be one. 64 gig fits what, 5000 songs and 10 movies? That's the maximum there. Just not enough.
And lean forward to see the screen to stopt the screen fading?liquidat0r wrote:

I don't think it's designed for that.
Also, he mentioned sitting on a bus/train.

Well in the video (posted in this thread) they had someone typing with two hands ...
wow take it easy Linky, I'm sure kmar has heard of Netbooks but he has a point - the battery life sucks on my Netbook, told you so before you bought yours, batteries with bigger capacities make a Netbook even heavier and bulkier and the iPad looks very slim and light.FFLink wrote:

You mistake how I'm posting, I'm not getting angry or anything, I'm cool
What you're saying Bevo is basically - use a computer whenever you have some free time. Are phones not enough? Can't you watch videos on them, listen to music or did phones become obsolete with the announcement of the iPad?Bevo wrote:

I don't think anyone is saying that there is a huge market for this. But I do think there could be a market none-the-less. Again, I can't believe there is no camera.. but that goes back to this being a purely consumption device..Sup wrote:

My phone is great and all, but it's (like I said) full to the brim with music. It's a necessity. Videos take up far too much space, and the screen isn't that great. Streaming youtube is generally grainy as fuck and I can't even make out what's going on. It works great for a phone and some features are nice when nothing else is available, but it's far from optimal.
My laptop on the other hand is a power-machine (well, comparatively) but she eats through battery like a fat kid eats bacon. It's somewhere close to 8 or so pounds and had a 15' screen. It's heavy and bulky, good when power is at least accessible and don't have to carry it very far.
This tablet on the other hand with (i'll give it 8) hours of battery life, 1.5lb and 9x7 or so dimensions is much more portable. I could take it with me anywhere i'd take my backpack or gym bag. I walk anywhere from 3 to 8 miles in a given day around campus, so yes there's a giant distinction here. It would just need a shitton more HD space.
Unhinged Netbook with the iphone touch and apps functionailty.

I think it's missing a trick without a camera...but think about these 2 things.
1) If there was a camera you'd want it to be of a quality suitable to look great on the screen, a shitty 3.2MP one wouldn't do it justice and any picture you took you wouldn't want to show on that screen.
2) Imagine taking a picture with that thing! It would be like holding a photoframe out to physically frame what you want to take a picture of, you'd look like a douche!

I now have a picture of a midget holding an iPhone up to his face like he was looking through a window
