My BF2 keeps crashing to the desktop when try to login to the account server. I try retrieving my account information and it crashes. I did a 'clean' install, re-installed Windows XP w/SP2, loaded latest Nvidia drivers, loaded BF2 and crash. Added the patches; crash. I loaded BF2:SF and patches; crash. It keeps crashing. I tried single player; crash. I tried creating a new account; crash. I've re-installed, re-patched, and everything else you can think of; crash. The game runs fine on my current system, but I'm building a new one. My (new)current system is:
AMD 3500
80GB HD (temp until ready)
ASUS A8V motherboard(latest 4in1 pak)
2 GB 3200 RAM
XFX 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI AGP card (latest drivers)
Plextor DVD/CD-RW 740-A (firmware updated)
Marvell Yukon Ethernet (latest drivers also)
ULTRA X-Connect 450 watt P/S
Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2(NOT activated)
DirectX9c
27 in HDTV Westinghouse TV/Monitor

Everything is up-to-date. I've got newest drivers from Nvidia and VIA. Updated BIOS on MB and firmware for Plextor and newest sound drivers. Also manually updated Punkbuster. I've turned off my firewall and I can play through GameSpy on another game. I've even added other ports to open(ones listed from EA), since my firewall says it can play BF2, but wanted to make sure. I think that covers it. I've seen forums where people are crashing to desktop, but it is AFTER they login. I need a solution to login. I've cleared my profile and that doesn't work. I've tried the CD-ROM troubleshooting. I don't think its a internet connection, I believe it is something else. I have NOT activated my copy of Windows XP HE yet, due to the fact I might have to re-format again. I was waiting until I found the solution. Will not activating Windows XP (still have 25 days) affect the game or DirectX9c? Any suggestions? Please help.

update your service pack (you said youve got service pack2 not activated) that might be it.. i have heard that a few choice systems reject the 6800 gt when playing bf2. check compatibility with there main website. also the processor might be 'spiking' i have a 550 PSU on mine and it has never spiked.

with xp if phone them and give a name and address they will take that down and form an account against your key so if you have to activate again they should allow you to so long as you give the correct name and address

Also take down any information that they give you theye are total dum arses some times

I did discove something new. I put my old ATI 8500 in and the game loaded fine. I thing there might be an issue between Nvidia and VIA or maybe my VIA chipset is bad. The card runs fine normally, but crashes when logging in. I have ALL the latest drivers(VIA/Realtek/Marvell/Nvidia/ATI) and BIOS(except for betas). I put my XFX 6800 GT in my old computer and in runs fine. There is no issue with 6800 GTs on BF2. I'm leaning toward two things. Either my VIA chipset is bad.(ASUS says there are no issues with compatibility)Or maybe my ULTRA 450W PSU can't handle it. But that doesn't make much sense considering it runs everything else. Any ideas?

well if u have more than 2 Hdrives, 1 disc drive, 1 vid card, 1 audio card u should be using a higher watt power supply. especially when u tack on the any usb devices.
I think on the box of the 6800 it tells u to have a 450 w or higher power supply.

Right now, I have one hard drive, one dvd, no floppy, and 1 video card. No other devices have been added. Sound is onboard, though I do plan to use my Audigy later when it is running properly. Not much using power.
