Looking for some backup software

I'm looking for some sort of backup software. Yes, I have Googled but have a plethora of options, and therefore was looking for hands-on experience with any particular program.

So, I just need some simple software to make local backups. The box I'm using it on has two hard drives, and one hard drive is solely a backup drive. I want to copy the contents of a folder on the first drive into an organized folder on the second drive on a set schedule, say, once a week. I want the files to create a timestamped folder (IE: 11/23/2008) when it does a backup, so that the data is kept organized.

Is such software available? I would prefer free/opensource, but anything you can suggest is fine.

Note that it doesn't need to have network capabilities, however it'd be an added bonus if that were the case.

if you are using XP, the built-in windows backup utility should serve your needs. it's called NTbackup and is located in the system tools folder in your start menu.

if you are using vista.... its backup utility sucks balls and you'll want to use third-party stuff.

Like Steelie said, the NT backup should work for a basic backup. If you want something more sophisticated, but not too expensive, Acronis True Image works well. The home version is only in the $50-60 range.

It can do full system images, incremental, and specific file/folder backups on a scheduled time.

I use Acronis True Image on the 5 PC's in the house, and they run a weekely incremental backup to the NAS. I get an email from each PC saying if it was a success or not.

The file type created by Acronis is pretty handy- It creates a file for each backup created, and when opening that backup file, you browse the file directorys as if you were using Windows Explorer on the PC (You start at C, double click Users, Matt, Documents), etc...

Its a great "set it and forget it" option, but ideally I would like a rolling system, where it creates a new full backup say, once a month, and then does weekly incremental for that month. Start of next month a new full is created etc etc. Backups more than 1 year old are deleted.

Also if you know where to look it can be... obtained easily

What's the current state? Vista's backup is annoying.
GBridge does not seem practical for large amounts of data on a local network.

yeah i want something where if i need to go grab a file or two i can (well i guess you with ghost explorer) but i also want to be able to backup while the system is up.
