Internet browsers on my PC won't load. They all freeze at startup. I've done a reinstall of mozilla and tried IE, nothing. FF starts up in safe mode but its incredibly laggy at some parts. My friend thought I may have a virus, which is possible I suppose. I haven't run antivirus in a long time and my McAfee subscription ran out at like the end of 08.

Thoughts on free anti-virus, or any other possible solutions?

I would try malwarebytes first

Not sure if it's related but I had a problem the other night where neither FF or IE wouldn't load any page, as though I wasn't connected to the internet, which I was (x-fire and other stuff worked). I ran anti-virus etc. rebooted still nothing, today however everything seems fine. May not be the same as your having?

In terms of stuff to try, as Canin says malwarebytes might be worth trying, maybe also HijackThis and AVG or Avast.

Thanks guys.

Trying malwarebytes. I was browsing for some tf2 hitsounds and I got what appeared to be a virus/DOWNLOAD THIS ANTIVIRUS NOW after clicking on a reddit website. Not sure if the virus set itself to go off on a random webpage or what.

Eek, yep it's a virus for sure. It kills the malwarebytes.exe after I try to install it.

I think you got infected. Try MBAM and see what that brings you. Good luck. Also install yourself a firewall. Comodo is a good one.

Off to try this. If that doesnt work, i'll rename the exe on my lap and jumpdrive it over.

Safe mode didnt work but I was able to simply install to my jumpdrive and execute from there. Hopefully this clears it all.

Have you tried HijackThis yet that helped me out when I had a very similar problem.

lol my step-dad had this same thing. It would kill any exe you tried to open saying that exe was infected then try to take you some site to buy something. AVG was actually smart enough (after provoking an update) to know something was attempting to kill its process and was able to kill the offending processes and their corresponding images.

If the come online ill look at the logs to see their names so you can boot up off of a linux disk and blow them away.

I think you got it from porn tbh.

edit: i see you got it fixed, good

AVG that bitch.

Or, Hijack this! (or what ever it is, been mentioned previously) to see exactly what you've got (post logs here so people can read them)

Try updating malwarebytes again, and run in safe mode.

False alarm? A reboot cleared it up. I guess I'll grab AVG and Hijack this if it occurs again. I'm not really worried about it since it doesn't really do all that much and I hardly use inet browsers on my PC.

Bump.

Appears it's not a virus? This still happens on and off and I don't think malware of any kind is to blame. Anyone have ideas?

Seems to be a 50/50 chance that my browsers will either work or not work after I boot up my pc.

My PC got thorooughly screwed, pretty sure it was a virus attack which scrambled everything, no trace of anything once I got anti-virus to work.

You guys think it's still a virus even though it happens on and off? Booted her up today and everything is normal.
