you should be able to modify the boot loader for win7.  unplug the external drive, boot into windows, and launch bcdedit from the command line.  i'm currently sitting at an XP system, so i can't help with exactly what you need to do next, but it involves setting the proper drive as the windows boot drive... hopefully some others can add the next steps.

what does your bios say about the boot order?

Does it let you change the boot order in the BIOS? Try dissabling boot from SATA. I thougt you were going to format that bastard.

Also, you should be able to plug in the sata drive after you boot to SSD. SATA is hot-swappable meaning the sytem does not need to be off when you plug it in, just like USB

yes could be, its called USB legacy support. Disable it and it will disable the external HDD when booting but it will work fine when in Windows

ssd is 1st boot device. nothing else. ssd isnt on the list when the external is plugged in (external is in its place)

But don't go pulling it out without stopping it - like everyone does for USB....

They don't like that.
