Hey guys, need some help finding a Socket 478 Motherboard. My girlfriend has an old Dell Dimension 2400 that she wanted me to look at. Me and Finray set about trying to fix it, but concluded that the motherboard is fucked. So what we're going to do is re-use the case, processor, psu and hdd for a server.

It's a Micro ATX case, and I'm looking for the cheapest one possible.

Thanks, karmas all round

he and finray wrote the names of all the pieces on a paper, and drew it out of a hat.

HDD was fine, psu is providing power, mobo isn't posting. at all.

And how did you rule out CPU/RAM - which are equally likely to cause that.

And rest of the possibilities.

I could list page long what need to be checked before being even remotely sure what is the problem.

tbh - you can't tell. Unless you have spare components to swap out you can never be certain.

Mobo, CPU and RAM are top of the list. I assume the board has on board graphics, otherwise GPU is always a possibilty. If you checked the PSU and HDD in another machine, then it's less likely to be them.

Do you have another machine you can test the RAM in (though that doesn't really tell you much - sometimes RAM works in one machine but not another).

It has onboard gfx. We could test the psu in another pc, but it's a 200W, so it would barely start anything lol. Can't check the PSU in another machine, because if I had a socket 478 mobo that's working, why wouldn't I just use that? And the ram is DDR 333mhz...I do not have any archaic pcs lying around that will take that

Multimeter and hotwiring PSU to the rescue.

I might as well buy a dirt cheap mobo and try that.

Tbh I thought it wasn't worth trying to save, the point of looking at the computer was to save the hard-drive, and I also thought the Server idea was a bit of a pipe dream.

E: We checked the PSU by swapping mine in, by the by.

How dirt cheap do you think you can get a mobo for?

You could probably buy the whole system for £10. I sold a load of better old Dells than that for £15 each.

It's not going to be worth doing. Do you really want to spend more than the machine is worth on a part that isn't even particularly likely to fix the fault and invest loads of time gutting and rebuilding the machine?

Wasn't really directed at you - but at them.

As I suspect yours wasn't really directed at me - but at them.
